Default question regarding engine refresh costs

I know a lot can depend on what is found once a motor is torn down for inspection... That said, I'm looking to have the LPE 427 in my car gone over in the near future, and I'm trying to gauge my potential financial commitment for the project

The car runs great, but burns more oil than I'd like it to after 60k miles on the forged motor. In addition, I'd like to install a more agressive cam; as the current LPE cam in the car is very mild. I don't EXPECT any suprises, but we all know that things don't always go as planned.

Having LPE go over the motor is out of my budget (and just about everyone's), but It's been dead reliable to this point, and I'd like a similar level of workmanship from whoever I have do the work the second time around. Basically I just want the motor re-ringed, bearings replaced, balancing, etc, as well as a new cam, and anything that needs to be upgraded/replaced due to wear or simply being outdated.

Any ballpark figures from you guys? The guys on corvetteforum seem to overspend on these projects quite a bit...

Are you looking for a shop to remove the engine, refresh and re-install? A lot depends on what is found but it sounds like you just need a hone / rings / bearings. How much oil are you burning?

I can pull the motor and drop it off if need be, Wouldn't mind just dropping the whole car off if the price was right though...

I go through a quart or so every thousand miles at this point depending on how I'm driving the car, Honestly the car consumed oil when I bought it, and it hasn't gotten any worse in the 3 years I've had it so I'd almost certainly attribute it to worn rings.

More than likely will need pistons, rings and bearings. Maybe resize the rods with that mileage. Then have the head valve guides checked with new valve springs.

I would guess $6-8k with having a shop do everything.

just an fyi. to change bearing and rings in my buicks it costs about $600-800. If machine work is needed it just goes up and up. I use a shop in PA in Philly. They will be doing my LS1 over the winter, I don't expect to pay more than $1000

Ok, back on the horse here so to speak! At this point I'm looking for a shop who can take care of the whole thing start to finish... Pulling the motor myself has been continually pushed back due to weather and other things getting in the way. I know spring is super busy for everyone but it's starting to drive me nuts having it sit!

I was the same way. My garage isn't very big and I just didn't have the space with 3' of snow and cold weather blocking my garage door. I broke out the shovel, called AAA, and sent the car to Diablo Formula. He's pulling the engine and diagnosing my problem for me. I'm short on nerves, patience, and space so I said screw it. Just waiting to hear the diagnosis now.

Just finishing up a 436CI LS7 swap in a 2000 Camaro. Hope to have dyno numbers on this one this week. It's pretty busy now but if you want I can get this done for you. Give me a ring.

Right now all the good engine shops are slammed. My normal shortblock builders are 2-3 months out.
