Right. But if he's on his own, and going to school you get deductions for your tuition. My fiance got a big chunk back this year because she gets to claim money spent on tuition to obtain her Masters in Education, which is required for her job.
In fact I don't even think it has to be college related, but if you take any course or attend any kind of workshop pertaining to your profession that you have to pay a fee for out of pocket, you get to claim it.

what fscking kills me is that i'm married, have to support my wife, NYC area is fscking expensive as hell - and i still get taxed to death
