When I was breaking in my motor Slowhawk said to use reg oil for first 1k or2. This seats the bearings. Then switch to the synthetic of your choice.

buy a decent 10-40 oil, and a decent filter. put it in, run the car for 5 minits or so, shut it down, change the oil/filter, put basic oil in again, dyno the car or drive it for a hundred miles or so, change it again, then go 1k or so and change it again if you want this is the time to go to synthetic.

wait is this just after a cam and heads install? If so id switch to a 10w-40 synthetic with a good filter. Im running 10w-40 amsoil and amsoil filter and it runs great. Unless its a new engine I dont think you need to change to a regular oil over a synthetic.

I like to use dino oil with a new engine for the first few changes. I monitor the oil usage very closely. When it essentially stops burning oil, the next change I go to synthetic. For my LS1 Camaro, that ended up being after the third change (I used 500 miles, 2000 miles, and 5000 miles on the clock for changes). It sealed up right after the 5000 mile change, and I switched to syn the next change. I think it took so long because it may have had Mobil 1 originally from the factory.
I like Castrol GTX for break in. It's a high performance dino oil that is tough to beat.
