In short, 1998 the drop test law went into effect, thus manufacturers who did not participate could not sell their semi-auto's in MA. Poly frame semi-autos are also banned in the 1998 law, so only these type of grandfathered weapons are legal in MA.

Class A is needed for high capacity, in this case.

poly frame??? no.... my walther P99 was made in like 1999 or 2000 and is polymer framed.

check out the website for Four Seasons gun shop in woburn for more info: http://www.fsguns.com/regulations.html

it pretty much just says that a gun has to have a bunch of specific safety features, they have to submit several samples to MA for testing, and there are two bodies that need to approve the firearm before it can be sold in MA (the attorney general list, and 'the roster' list.)

The military issue Beretta is called the M9. I think it's the standard pistol unless you're in the Marine Expeditionary Force (1911s) or another special force like SEALs. I can tell you one thing for certain, Army MPs carry M9 Berettas.

I'm pretty sure the Polymer frame's are not 1998 compliant. Same reason why the MA compliant stamped Glocks are steel, and all others are polymer. I have a poly HK that made it in pre 98. Good luck finding a new polymer framed semi-auto in MA now.

I'm not 100% up to speed on what brands and such you can buy new, but many you can't. Like Springfield Armory, you cannot buy new in MA (which is made here) as well as HK. Although you can get a new Sig.

The M9's we had in the USAF weren't much better then throwing a rock. They straight up sucked. I won't own a Berreta untill my mind is changed by firing a nice one. I can't say enough about how much I hated that pistol.

Tha military used **** ammo in the M9's that's why they had problems. There were no problems with the beretta's sold to the public. I have 2 an original 92F from 1987, and a Police only model 92G (safety works as a decocker only) Both guns have had 10K+ rounds through them and only had a spring break in the 92F (spring to reset the trigger forward)

But I still like my Sig's & HK's better. I change off between the Sig 228 (9mm)& 229 (.357 sig) as well as the HK P7M8 & P7M13 (9mm)for carry.

I've had my Beretta 92FS since I was 13, and 29 now. I love it, it's my favorite pistol I own (out of a dozen others). It NEVER jams, accurate enough for personal protection, and fits like it was custom made for my hand. I don't know what the hell Obsolete was talking about. Maybe he was just a terrible shot....But after what happened in the early years of Vietnam, the military doesn't screw around with firearms anymore. No more cost cutting, shortcuts, etc., like the early M16s. Berettas have been absolutely tortured and still come out firing.
As an added note to my love for this pistol, out of all the others I own, ie. Glock 21, HK USP 40, Browning High Power, 1911s, .357s, .44s, etc, the Beretta is the one under my pillow every night.

Back when I bought this I fired at least 25 other semi autos including some high end HK, glocks and others. Not to take away from any others but nothing felt as nice to fire or fit my hand better. Polymer frames just do not have the silky smooth feel when cycled. The military was achieving over 17,000 rounds fired without a jam when they were evaluating these . I like the 9mm because the ammo is cheap enough to practice with and there is not too much kick so follow up shots are right on. If you cant hit it does not matter what you have. the internal laser is reallly nice for home defense when your eyes are still half awake.

If I didn't already have a Beretta, and an FFL, I'd make you an offer. Other then that...Berettas are known for having amazing ergronomics and reliability. I read a test that the military allows I think a 1 in 1100 round malfucntion. A mark the 'venerable' 1911 can barely reach without modification. The Beretta can easily go over 10000 rounds without a single gun related malfunction. An added note, I'm very sick of all the gun rags putting the 1911/.45 on such a high pedestal. When using the right ammo and with a properly placed shot, a .380 is more effective then any .45. Read the Strousburg tests, the .380 MagSafe out performed EVERY single other conventional hollowpoint in EVERY single other caliber. So a 9mm Beretta loaded with MagSafes is the best life insurance you can buy.

we go shooting all the time, (me and some other military friends) and they are all about a 45 making a bigger hole...but their muscle memory fades after half their magazine...i can shoot 2 mags (30 shots) in center mass at 25 yards with my 9, and their 8 round mags will have probably 10-12 ...granted is also depending on how well you shoot like someone else mentioned...a 9mm isnt as big but a bullet is a bullet...and if i pop off 5 in your chest and you hit me with 1 or 2...i think my odds of living are better....on another side note i dont sleep w/ my 9 under my pillow...i have my friends barret 50 cal in my loft
