Smile Anyone looking for a young and hungry Mechanical Engineer?

Some quick stats about myself: I'm 23 and recently graduated from Rutgers Univ. New Brunswick with a BS in Mech. Engineering and working for an energy conservation company.

I am throwing this question out there because I am a fanatic about automobiles and went to engineering school to gain some fundamentals to hopefully lead to a career with cars. Suffice to say that hasn't come full circle and it would be a dream to get into the auto industry...preferably in auto performance and customizing. Going into more detail, I would like to become a professional EFI tuner and design new aftermarket components. This is something I would love to get into full time, as long as I can pay the bills of course but also something I'm willing to put my free-time into. I know I have the passion, but just need the experience that I feel I could gain by getting involved. I read and read all that I can but I'm a hands on guy and as any real experienced person knows...you gotta get your hands dirty. I want to be happy going to work and I feel that this is the direction I need to go.

If anyone has advice or is looking for a guy like me, feel free to post or PM me.

Good stuff, man. I lived in Busch campus (in Barr) during my freshman year and enrolled in the College of Engineering. I ended up transferring to a local community college in South Jersey and then to a local college. I got my BS in accounting with a minor in information systems.

Yeah, Rutgers was titsville. I bet you had plenty to suck on, but I hope you weren't a lab rat for the Rutgers-created STD's.

Good luck, man.

I lived in Barr (4th floor) my freshman year and spent most of my time on college ave to get more of a social scene. I had my fun and got away clean. Nice stable of vehicles you got there.

If this post doesn't help you at all, you should probably try really hard getting your resume out to companies you are interested in. Also, I would bring a resume to any automotive gathering/shows or anything. You never know by just talking to someone looking to sell a product, you might be able to meet someone that can get you an in. That is always the easiest way. Otherwise, the automotive industry is really competative for engineering. I know a few large automotive companies I have seen at career fairs will not even consider a individual with a GPA under 3.5. Having experience under your belt helps too! Good luck to you

I had an old man who was retired with 30 years at GM, a 3.2 GPA, and a close friend high up at the Tech Center out in MI, and I couldn't even get a hello from them.

Though in light of the hard times of the US Auto industry the past 5 years since I've graduated, its probably for the better.

Good luck, its a dream field to get into as a car guy. Have you considered any kind of race team? There's a team (Dyson Racing) that runs C5R's in American LeMans Series out of Poughkeepsie NY not far from here, I always though that would be a cool as hell place to work as an engineer.

That's definitely the case I have heard from a lot of graduates. They only take the top top of the class. You figure it makes sense though, since the automotive career is they reason why 90% of people go into mechanical engineering. It is sad to hear that they won't even take your resume unless you have over a 3.5 or 3.8, that is almost impossible to get that high of a GPA.

Happens at all the job fairs at my school too with damn near every major it seems... I find accounting mildly enjoyable in addition to ridiculously difficult sometimes, so I don't have a gleaming 4.0 which "surprises" some companies, oh well...

What kills me is I knew a few who did join GM, who were bright enough to have sparkling GPAs, but knew about zero when it came to cars. Now I know any good engineer can pick up the aspects of a related field in due time, but it just seems that one with an automotive background would be more able to hit the ground running, instead of taking 6 months to figure out what a crankshaft is.

Thanks for all the tips and good words guys. I realize it is a very competitive industry, but I feel it's something I have to try my best to get into while I'm young. If it doesn't work out then it's not meant to be right now. Anyone that knows me thinks I not only should be, but belong in the industry. Thanks again and hopefully someday I will be in the position to help that kid looking to do the same as I am now.

As the same thing I have heard people told me (and I am sure any other ME with the love everyone here has).

Good luck! When I graduate, I will be in the same boat as you looking for this opportunity, although I plan to get my masters and MBA before that. In the mean time, I am busting my *** to raise my GPA to a 3.7/3.8, which will likely be impossible.

I was in your shoes about 5 years ago. I was actually lucky enough to get a call from Callaway (thats right... the tuner shop) in CT to come down for an interview. First thing they said to me was I was lucky to even come in for an interview... they invited 6 people out of 1000's of resumes. They didnt end up hiring anyone out of the people they interviewed and I took a job elsewhere. Sometimes you cant get into the field you want, but if you stay interested and get experience with your own fbody, opporunities may present themselves down the road.

BTW, my cousin's name is Brian Deluca He lives in cali...

Good for you. I mean, that's the reason why most people go to college in the first place--to make money by getting a job afterwards. If you can make a lot of money without going to school, then more power to you. You're a freakin' hero.

Well, maybe they want to learn something before getting married to somebody with a lot of money.
