Default Best shocks for the buck?

Hey guys, I just got my tax checks in and need to do some stuff with Trans Am. I already bought some slotted rotors and hawk pads for a budget upgrade to my stock breaks and rotors, and now I have about $500 give or take a few to spend on shocks. I have stock shocks and they are BEAT. I really would like the QA1 setup, but I will not be able to afford all 4. Does anyone have some suggestions? Maybe a combination of QA1s and some other shocks? Maybe don, you can chime in? Thanks in advance

Look into Competetion Engineering shocks, if QA-1's are too steep for your budget... I used them on previous racecars w/success. I believe they are a Ct. company, Steph. Their stuff is good, IMO. Someone here will knock them for sure, though.... Do a search on their site....WJ

Thanks Warren. I am looking for something cheaper than QA1, and wanted to see if anyone had used anything cheaper with success. Everything else I searched was all QA1. I appreciate it, as most of my money needs to go to college right now.

Sweet, the QA1s up front and Competition Engr rears would be approximately $550 w/o shipping. Would anyone suggest that as a good combo? Warren, did you have this combo on your car? Too bad competition engr doesnt have the front shocks. The rears are about $60 a piece cheaper than the QA1s!

Many of my CMDR friends are running Competetion Engineering shocks and traction components on their 1/4 mi. cars w/great success--even some low 9--hi 8 sec. cars. I ran their rears on my '99 blk M6 SS car. Never took the stockers (shocks) off my old '02 A4 SOM car....good shocks/struts might've slid me into the high 11's...Good luck, Steph. WJ

I don't know anything about the Competition Engineering shocks, but The rear QA1's I have are great. I would get the rears and get the fronts later. That's what I'm doing. Spending the cash on the heads now.

Whoa, first off I didnt realize adj QA1s are over $300 a pop. F*ck that. I won't have that much money for all 4 in about 6 years. Also, the comp engineering are drag springs. I rather have an adjustable set because I don't think I would like those on the street. Is there anything else?

I might just buy a replacement for my stockers. I would like a better set, but I do not have enough money, and my stock shocks are just really beat. Anything is going to be better than what is on there now. That is the main reason I am looking to replace them anyway

You dont need the double adj, I just looked at speed inc and you can get them for like $650 all the way around. Keep stock springs.

Steph, I ran the Competition Eng. #C 2700 3-way adjustable rear shocks on my '99 SS m6. Ran them 11k miles on the street w/no problems and pulled consistent 1.65-1.67 sixty ft. times w/a built factory 10 bolt (4.10's and 16" ET Streets) for 70+ passes w/no problems. There are no springs on these shocks--they basically look just like the Hal rears. They worked excellent and check prices--Summit, Jegs, etc. Most everyone sells them.
p.s. I have some low-mile rear stockers in my basement that you can have for "0" if yours are completely shot and you don't want to spend any $ right now. Can't help you out w/any fronts, though. Hope this helps... WJ

I misunderstood and thought the double adj ones are ones everyone gets, and was no way going to spend $350 a piece on them. I am actually just considering dropping the $650 on all 4 hal shocks. I am treating myself as I am receiving a scholarship for my academics and do not have to spend as much money as I have saved for school next year. I am still considering the Comp Eng ones too though. You are saying those rear shocks felt great on the street? I take my car on long trips during the summer, so I want shocks I can adjust to the street to feel good for normal driving.

Why not just get some street shocks like Koni or the SLP shock/spring kit then just buy slicks for your race tires?

We know you don't race that much so street is more important.I use to run the SLP spring/shock package on my Hawk for awhile.Car handled and drove awesome on the street and still pulled 1.7 60's at the track.I switch to the HALS and got no better 60' times.
