I will probably get the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD multi drive once the price comes down. 1K is too much money for a dvd player!

Sony and Samsung use the same LCD's. Any Sony from the XBR line uses a Samsung LCD.

You always want to use LCD's for gaming. LCD's do not have any kind of image retention or ghosting. Plasma's still have some type of image retention but nothing that will cause damage.

all that a plasma has is screen retention now, and most plasmas have orbitors or pixel shift which will prevent that also, and the fact of the matter is that lcd's also suffer from screen retention, it was just never as big a issue as with the plasmas. as for ghosting, that is a turn that is only used with lcds because of there slower refesh rate, on fast moving action you can see a ghost on every lcd out there.

Im happy with my $1500 philips 42 inch plasma, I got a heck of a deal on it at circuit city, normal price was over 2000 but it was a close out. its good enough for me. everyone puts down philips every time I say about it, but philips is all I ever had in TVs and never had a problem with it, and when there side by side in the store I cant see a diffrence.

You're not looking close enough!! Just kidding, I'm sure it is a good TV. It is sometimes hard to make out the difference in the stores when viewing side by side.

I don't watch movies but I'm just looking for something nicer then what we have which is an old school regular 32" TV. Whats the best TV for around $800? I'm guessing something atleast 37", over 40" would be even better. Thoughts guys?

for 800 I dont think youll get anything over 32 inch, most 40+ inch TVs are over 1000.

Just buy a 40 on sale LCD, DLP, plasma it doesnt matter IMHO. It's all in the feed. If you dont have a HD line coming into it, it'll look terrible anyway. From where youre coming from, if you get a 720i or 1080i any brand TV it'll look great. There trying to get rid of these because 720P and 1080P are coming into the stores and the prices on the 1080i's are dropping. Kinda like new car models coming in and got to get rid of last years in the old days. Size is important too. How far are you sitting from the TV?? A 40 will fill the room from 5 or 6 feet. I'm running my 55 Mits from about 8 feet.

If you are just watching regular NTSC broadcasts then the older Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) TV's are the best. Where the HDTV's really shine are when you have a high def signal coming in through cable or antenna and of course through a blu-ray or hd-dvd player with hdmi.

First off The burn in on Plasma's are a thing of the past.
Unless u leave a stationary pic up for an hr u shouldnt have ANY isssues..

The Sony only uses the inner screen from Samsung, there outter screens are from Sony but u correct to a point.Sonys are built in Samsungs K1/K2 plant..According to some AVS forum guys the SONY has alittle better engine than the Samsung but the pic still isnt as good and they are having mura, pillars and cloud issues..

Now as far as motion blurr on a LCD becuase of rate, well thats more of a signal issue then the TV itself but u are correct there is some even from the LCD typ TV's because of rate time,I have seen very slight issues but only on bad HD signals...On Discovery HD the pic is PERFECT,WBHD is PERFECT TOO...Some of the other HD channels do have it,but it will show up on a Plasma too..

Now the NEW 81 Series Samsung with LED backlighting will eliminate all and any motion blurr but its going to be $$$$$ when it comes out in Sept...

I still think the LCD is better
1080P is cheaper/Bigger screen for the money/Less costly to run

Poineer Elite is the only way to go for Plasma but u better have at least 4500 to spend

Ken,If I was spending 800 on a set I would look at the Samsung LN-T3242H (32inch)
Its only 720 but on a 32in set u wount need 1080P since its under 46in,Its a nice set with good contrast and an brite picture...Digital Cable and a upconverting DVD player will look great on this set...U can usually buy it for about 850.00...

Our living room is a decent size, 23 x 17. I'd have to measure to see the distance to each couch/chair. I'd guess the closer couch is about 8 feet and one further away is about 12. Yes, I am sure ANYTHING will be better then what we have! The TV I have was like $250 I think, its just a normal old school 32"!

the elites are amazing but you are forgetting about fujitzu which have the best processors of any tv in them and are on the same level as the elites, also the lgs and the panasonics have a amazing picture once the are calibrated and are very nicely priced. now that the burn in probs have been fixed with plasma it is the way to go, that is why sony is going back to plasma for there flat screens.

the basic way to figure out the screen size is for HD take the screen size and double it and for analog take the screen size a triple. granted a better equation is there but that works.

So Kenny, Andy is right. Figure the 8 foot couch esp if youre watching sports. 12 is a little far away. The reason why HD you can sit up closer is you cant see the scan lines as opposed to an analog feed. Now, HD cable or direct TV for the feed. I'm on the direct TV side. Cheaper and more channels and they have a pro football package. When you pull the trigger on it Andy( WTF, when did you get into this) post again and we'll help you tune it for best pic.

How much is the "Samsung 4665F rated # 1 LCD"???

Can you just setup this beast and plug in the cable? If you want Comcast digital cable, do you need a box?

if you want HD channels yes you need a HD box, and I will tell you even the non HD channels look better on a HD box, a normal cable box dont cut it on a big screen. its kinda like using a VCR on one, it looks like crap.

New to the game here:

Do I buy the HD box or can/does the cable company provide? What if a tv has a built in tuner - what does that mean?

you can rent it for so much a month with HD programing ,I think my box and extra HD channels are like 10 bucks a month, built in tuner just means thats its just not a stand alone monitor, you dont "need" a box to run it you could run a line right into it and make it work, but your just going to have a standard signal not a digital signal.
