I was just curious if anyone was from the area and what it's like, I have a possible job offer for a large contruction company as a civil engineer, and they've already told me they would like me in Northern Virginia. I get to go down there on the 4th for a second interview and check it out.
I was wondering though what the cost of living is really like, I hear houses are pretty expensive in the area (not that I plan on buying one right of school anyways), and I'd just like to know the pros and cons of the area.

Northern VA is retarded expensive for housing. Traffic sucks as well. I am in Tysons Corner and I'm paying $1560/mp for a 991 sqft apartment. You can't get a nice house until you're looking at $750k.
TONS of opportunity though. Plenty of people. If you're single, it's so-so. This is simply because, although there are plenty of attractive females, unless you're making a half-million a year, they're probably not too interested.

the closer you get to DC the more expensive housing will be..for instance in many areas of fairfax county small houses sell for $750k but if you go south a little (prince william or stafford) the same house would be $500k or sometimes less. Also the thing about most of the women is right, many of them around here are gold diggers

I work in Fairfax (but live in MD). Like has already been stated....the cost of living here is astronomical and traffic is horrendous. If you're willing to commute (ie. willing to **** half your life away in bumper to bumper), you can find (relatively) affordable housing. Luckily housing prices are starting to come down (due to the housing glut and subprime woes) but are still far from reasonable.
There are tons of Fbodies/Mustangs in the area, and if you're into drag racing, MD has a good selection of 1/4 miles strips (street action is hard to come by due to the afore mentioned horrendous traffic and 49 ******* cops per square mile...which is weird cuz there aren't that many donut shops around???)....but anyway....
If you enjoy traffic, long commutes, high housing costs, lots of cops, no donut shops, money grubbing women, and exploding immigrant population and living within the blast radius of the #1 terrorist target in the world...you'll really enjoy this area.

Ditto what everyone else said about traffic and high cost of living in northern VA, but the best benefit is the gatherings for us f-body owners. Once a month or more -- I make as many as I can in the spring and summer, but once the cold weather hits I tend to hibernate. If it's nice out next weekend I may make the trip out to Spanky's and see how the gang's doing!

I'm here near Chantilly...work in Chantilly and live in Ashburn just 13 miles up the road. Its terrible here. If I were you I wouldnt come here. We're hoping to move way south in a year. I'm from south east PA near philly and would actually move back there before I'd ever spend the rest of my life here ![Sad](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_sad.gif)
