sure is. the project got to the point where I couldn't turn back. many times i was ready to just sell what i could and put it back to stock but that would have required thousands of dollars in labor and thousands of dollars in parts PLUS i would have had to have found people to buy the stuff. It was a lose/lose situation for me. At least this way I have a base to work up from. It won't always have 485rwhp, trust me. I'm only spinning the blower at 14,000rpm. There's at least another 4000rpm left, plus the cam isn't optimal and the timing is set real low cause the iat's are kinda high. Trying to avoid detonation till i get a meth kit. I think I'll still be able to hit my 700rwhp goal when it's all said and done.

BUT, for now, this is my daily driver and I won't be doing much if anything to it for awhile. I have spent $30,000 so far and owe another $30,000 on the credit card. If I work a TON of overtime in the next year I can pay it off. Golf will have to wait.

wow, you've got some serious debt from that whole ordeal. But, when you have it all said and done, I think you'll be very happy with it. Sounds like you have some small interior/stereo issues to work out, that shouldnt' be too bad to deal with.

The meth kit, again shouldn't be too bad to deal with, but I wouldn't really try to push it to get to the 700 rw mark. I bet with the meth kit and a touch more tuning a solid 520 is possible, pulley it up and maybe 550. Change the cam if it's that wrong, possible 575... but at some point that amount of power in a truck like that, probably is gonna make things get real unreliable because of the weight.

I say get your interior issues resolved, add the meth kit for the effort of safety, not more power, and enjoy it. You've spent enough, so get some use from it!

You should be able to make more than that in the end. As long as the 408 is worth a ****.

Well at least your finally getting the truck back to have fun with, just in time for summer too. I remeber when you were first posting about the 408 and the kit from "Turd-O Zone"
and still cant believe it evolved into the mess that it did. Any chance for a lawsuit to get back some of the money wasted?

Slowhawk is right, leave the pwr level alone. Fix your interior stuff and the stereo issue, and leave it be.

that's the plan. If I get the larger 8 rib crank pulley sooner than later it will be more so i can run a larger blower pulley and not get as much belt slip. The meth is ONLY to lower my iat which are freakishly high for some reason. (omg i just read all the stuff from dhpro on pt.net and i'm gonna puke).

aside from maybe making some changes to the pulley setup to avoid slip and investigating the iat issue(adding meth), i'm probably not touching it for awhile.

gotta fix the seat, dash, stereo, tierod/balljoint issues first. Not necessarily in that order, lol.

and oh, just my luck. the auto transporter had truck problems yesterday and isn't picking the truck up until today. He had planned on delivering it today but now he won't be here till Tuesday. It is spending the weekend in the Albany, NY area I'm told.

Damn, I know what it's like to have a vehicle for two years and do nothing but try to fix one problem a MILLION different ways and pretty much decide to sell the car things are going so wrong, so I feel your pain there. Fortunately for me, I haven't spent anywhere near that much money trying to fix mine, but then again I make less in a year than you owe on your credit card, so I would imagine the percentages are pretty similar if you can pay off that debt just by working a ton of extra overtime.

I wish you much good luck in the future. I myself am hopefully coming to the end of my two-year ordeal this Tuesday (knock on a BIG F'IN TREE).

tomorrow night. initially i was told it would be here Friday. That turned out to be bullshit. It will be making it's way from NY to Cape Cod, then Boston, then up here tomorrow. He said it will definitely be after I get home from work, so, after 8pm.

I'll be driving it to work Wednesday.

Stories like this are why I do all my own work unless it needs to be welded or tuned. Those labor bills are insane!

I don't know what you did other than power mods, but all that work and money for 485 rwhp and I'd be swinging from the rafters.

Actually the labor bills are not insane. The insane part was sending a vehicle to somebody that had no idea what they were doing which created all the other shop labor bills. The title shouldn't be "The cost of power" it should be "What it costs while trying to be cheap". Shop 1 gave a nice quote and caused more problems than anything else.

While I understand what you are saying about costing a ton of money because he may have tried to go with the cheapest quote and got screwed, you're wrong if you think even basic labor bills aren't insane. Being a sponsor who gets paid to do labor, obviously you're going to argue that it's not that bad, but when half the time the labor to install/tune a part is pretty much the same price as the part itself or more (which is true in many cases, though not all), that's insane.

For example, let's say I buy a cam package with springs and rods for my Z28. I can get one from from many places for $600-700. It would then cost me $500-600 or so at most places for the install and another $400 for the tune. $900-1000 to install/tune a $600-700 package. That's insane. And even without the tune, it costs about the same amount for the install itself as it does for the parts.

Obviously everyone can't do their own work, but I think ScreaminRedZ was just trying to point out that the amount of money you can save doing the work yourself is, indeed, INSANE.

You prove Ron's point.

And I don't want to think about it.
