If you wanted something a little nicer than the cobalt you could go with a Saab 9-3. They have the same 2.0 turbo motor as the Cobalt/Sky/Solstice and are four doors with a nice interior. I picked up my 2006 last year with only 8,000 miles on it for less than 20k. I still have 20k miles of free scheduled maintenance from the factory. I get 26-28mpg around town with a heavy foot but on the highway I easily average 34-36 cruising at 75-80.

i would get a brand new subaru legacy i was able to land mine 2008 500 down for 440 a monthit is the legacy limited package no leather, no heated seats, no nav, but powereverything else and a sunroof, including power seats which ar not available, plus standard all wheel drive a great warranty, and the lowest amount of recalls the past 5 years...nonturbo and it gets great gas milage and is still fun to drive....i love my subi....

I'm also looking for a efficient dd. My top choices are civic, corolla, prizm or saturn sl/sc. Has to be manual. At first I wouldnt consider the saturns but if they run as good as mentioned above I just might get one. Saturn makes some of the ugliest cars I've ever seen, so dark window tint should be manditory.
