I need a Daily Driver 4-banger
I would like to get a four-banger daily driver as I now commute 50 miles per day and would like to save on gas. Can be stick 3 or 5 door model.
Regardless of make, strong performance and durability is key!
What say you..

you might laugh, but have you considered a saturn (sl or sc style)? I bought a 97 SL1 for a beater for my 70 mile commute, I get 37 to 40 mpg no matter how much I beat on it, and its actually kinda fun to drive. There are also tons up aftermarket parts for it, they run for 200K miles easy, and are cheap as dirt. The SL2/SC2 models have a dohc engine that makes them fairly quick too. Just a suggestion to look into.

I got a 98 saturn sc2 for a thousand bucks with 95 k on it. It gets a real world 37 MPg on my 100 mile roud trip commute. I dont care where I park it or getting stuck behind trucks on the hwy. Now I just have to tint the windows dark so people cant see me driving it. I take a lot of flack from everyone but do get the last laugh at the pump. Saturns are cheap---about 1/2 the price of comparable jap cars andjust as reliable and American made. Cant beat them for a beater.

my uncle just leased an aura. sweet *** car for 21k imo. what about a g6? malibu? fusion and milan are niice cars that get descent mileage. whatever you get make sure its domestic. a ford dealer down the road keeps telling me how dead they are. i dont like that.
would you be interested in a low mileage GTO?

I love my '96 Maxima 6cyl 5spd.
I drove from High Point North Carolina... over the Delaware Memorial Bridge, and did not have to get at the rest area at exit 2 on the Turnpike! That is over 450miles to a 16gal tank of gas! All highway of course. I love that damn thing!

What sort of budget are you looking for? If you want something new that gets great mileage, performs well, and will be inexpensive to maintain the '08 Cobalt SS is by far your best choice. The '08s will be out soon, they are turbo charged, no longer supercharged. GM has improve the ride/handling/brakes for '08 and they still get ~ 30 MPG on the highway while running low 14s @ 103 MPH. Keep in mind they have a 100k warranty. You can not beat that car right not for a fun economical daily driver.

My neighbor just bought a new Chevy HHR....Cobalt motor. He's getting 27-29 mpg around town w/auto trans...Paid $20k out the door... Chevy/Gmc S10's w/2wd, 4 cyl. & 5 spds. ('98-'02) usually get 26-28 mpg driving sensibly...WJ

Is that the turbo 4 banger or the N/A version?

The mopar SRT Nitro also looks good.. but I'd get a Chevy before a mopar.
The Imports are nice, but too much.. 27-30k for a small 4-banger? No Way!

The newer Civic Si is nice but the Cobalt is quite a bit faster and gets significantly better gas mileage. The Cobalt also has the 100k warranty. Did you watch the video I posted? Its a neat car.
