i am in same boat with my business too

biggest thing for me is to treat customers fair, IE explain things if they don't understand, help them make an informed decision, be fair on pricing.

that seems to be a lot of key elements for repeat customers in my case.

when dealing with performance end. first question i ask is What are your goals?
i do not say make full blown race car out of a daily driver. Try to compromise where as the customer will be happy with improvement. usually if you give them informed advice they will follow it.

the term "customer is allways right" is waaayyyy overrated. some people take advantage of that and try their best to get something for free behind that term. its rediculous. being in the business for 12years i run into it everyday being a service manager at a dealership and i cant imagine what it must be like in the performance industry.

lets count how many posts are gonna request something for free...

very good point about customer's always right. i have been running into situation where the customers think all mechanics are out to screw you.
i have had the customers screw me over more than anything. my favorite is when they bring the car in for service for one thing and something totally unrelated happens next. since i touched it last it was my fault.

+1.

I am a Service Advisor for a dealership and see some of it. I disagree with the term the customer is always right, because they aren't(I am not going to tell a customer that), but half the time they are far from it. Many people in this day and age feel they deserve something for nothing and they don't. In situations where we are not at fault with something, I have noticed that explaining everything to them and working with them coming to a reasonable and acceptable agreement showing them that I am willing to work with them goes a long way. You have to give a little to get something and there are some that won't give, but they end up not getting anything. Now of course if it was our mistake, then they are taken care of.
