Download Malware Bytes install it and let it remove the files re-boot and see if you get the error message after you run the program boot from your XP or Vista CD go into the install screen to re-install you will be given an option at this point to try and fix the OS run that and see what happens.
We had a computer in our office had the same issue we ran the malware bytes then the install XP cd and had it repair the OS and all was good.

Edit: Definitely exhaust all your options prior to reinstalling since it would be much easier not losing all your saved stuff and bookmarks yada, yada, yada...
Do you still have all of the CDs and **** that came with the laptop? If you do, you should be set once you have someone pull the data for you.

However, I am getting ahead of myself. It may not be necessary.
If you do want my help, let me know and I'll do a little bit of research at work today on repairing a XP install with a Windows CD.
Is it even Windows XP? I probably should have asked that.
If you do a re install I would recommend partitioning the hard drive into two size so you can save your data on one and the OS on the other. will make it alot easier the next time.
