HI guys I'm really on the fence about stalling my 02 z28 i dont wanna give up driveability in town because my car is a DD but i want the performance gain. Im in orlando now but will be driving down to ft. lauderdale friday afternoon so i was wondering if any of you had some time and could just take me for a quick spin in your stalled a4 I'd love to try it. Just wanna know how they drive around town since I do it a lot. I'll gladly throw you a few bucks for gas also thanks Dan-
Your best bet is a Yank SS3600 for all around driving ! The 02 SS i just sold w/ bolt-on's went 11.80@ 114 and w/ that stall the car got better gas mileage than the stock one and the only difference i felt from stock to the Yank was when u put your car in drive it does not creep foward as fast when u let of the brake.

I dont wanna be a dick by asking but how did the stall get better mpg? It takes more rpm to get moving with traffic? Maybe because the motor is slipping more so theres less load?
Because it is lighter than stock so @ cruising speed u r @ a lower RPM.Yank Converters feel like stock until you really get on your car then they stall out @ a higher RPM.Yank is not a cheap converter but r great all around if u buy a cheap converter like TCI or B&M they work but u feel the stall all the time !!!!!!!!

+1. And usually the car won't be to high in the rpms. I know mine would be in the lower rpms with regular cruising around

thanks guys i get the whole rotating mass this i guess it does kinda make sense when you think about it that way i had just always heard people losing mpgs when driving around town. i was looking at doing an ls6 conversion over the summer and no stall or just rebuild my ls1 and do the stall what do you all think is a better choice. I would think the better heads and cam of the ls6 top end would do more to my mpg's than a 3600 stall would? 6 months ago i couldnt really give a crap about wwhich one had better fuel economy but with gas the way it is right now and being in college with this as my DD it does raise concern now

I am not going to argue the fact but I have never heard of anyone getting better gas millage when putting in a nice converter!! I have had a Yank, Fuddle and now an FTI and i will tell you none compare to the FTI. The FTI is more efficient and seems to work much better considering it dropped my times .35 seconds over all the others. I drive my car every day and my wife also drives it on occasion with a 4000 stall and it drives great on the street and has great manners. Once you get one you will never own an auto with out one.

Thats the thing it has 120k on it now last 20k have been mostly highway driving from ft. lauderdale to orlando for school and i avereage about 12k on it per yr. it doesnt burn oil and keeps up fine with my friends lower mile ls1's its just I have a pretty much brand new ls6 shortblock from an 01 z06. So my options are to either complete the rest of the ls6 longblock with the 02 cam and heads and be happy with no stall or use ls1 heads and throw it as is with one of the mentioned stalls. In the end both will cost about the same price by the time i would get the heads and better cam to complete the ls6. Question is what is the better choice in mpg and performance. if i was in school closer to home and had a steady job all yr gas would bug me too much but the fact that i dont it does lol

Oh I know that completely, I wasnt planning on having the shortblock make any more power. Its just essentially to have a brand new motor would be nice. Only way id gain power is if i didnt go with the stall and built the ls6 shortblock into a true 02 spec ls6.. that is the question at hand as far as fuel economy and speed goes.
Just go w/ a converter for now while u finish the LS-6 and then u already have done the converter. What really sucks is i just sold some LS-6 Heads w/ work done to them for $750 & a Comp Cam & Springs for $250 so for $ 1000 u would have had finished the motor. The Cam was a 228/228-588/588 which is a little bigger than the LS-6 Cam but u would have had 500 @ the crank w/ that package.

Ya thats the thing my dads kinda on me to do something with the motor because i drive so far and he doesnt want it in the shed for too long lol. So bottom line is that it has to go in this summer just question is how should i put it in. I could just use stock ls1 heads on it for now and have it basically be a bolt on ls1 car with a stall or have a bolt on ls6 swap.......

thanks thats probably what ill end up doing should be close to the same mpg and be helluva sleeper lol hopefully low 12's without the stall and 11's with it. btw how is the vette compared to the stalled ss?
I would say it would be a close race against the 2002 SS.But the Torque Management in the Vette sucks *** !!!!!!!You punch the Vette and it is like there is nothing there then it wakes up and burns the tires but it is getting tuned Monday so thats solves that problem !!!!!!

lol i know what your saying my neighbor had an 07 for a while and it did the same thing haha., what do you think the ls6 swap will be good for in the quarter on the stock stall? i was thinking low 12's with a trap around 114-115?
I wish you were closer to me, I'd like to take anyone who has not been in a stalled auto for a ride. I DD my car with an FTI 4000 stall it's great around town and on the highway. Good gas mileage not better than stock but good. When you nail you can really tell a difference, it's just a completly different car. I love it.
I have a Yank 3600. Daily drove it for awhile. Very smooth around town in daily driving. The RPMs will definitely be a little higher than normal until it locks up (around 44 mph for me). For me definitely did not improve gas mileage. Actually its hard to say because I added the cam at the same time, but I just can't believe it would improve gas mileage seeing as the RPMs are higher until lockup.
