How can there be a "hold" on the car when you own it and didnt authorize them
(in writing) to take your car.
Was it highway patrol that called the wrecker because it was impeding traffic flow?
I hope everyone is paying attention to this and taking notes.
ALWAYS have it towed to your house, even if you have to pay for it yourself.
If they total it now it will be because the yard and tow bill was more than the repair costs.

I'm a firefighter in California and I see this stuff happen all the time.
I usually tell most people who have been in a accident (that aren't jerk-offs) to remove any items in the car you think you want to keep before they tow it away. If you don't you may not ever see them again once they leave with your car. Most tow truck service all get some type of kickback deal going with salvage yards to bring them certain type of wreck vehicles. Some yards are legit and some are a bit shady. I always tell any accident victim if they have AAA go with them or a reputable tow service rather some Joe independant tow driver.
Most car insurance companies that insure vehicles that are 10+yrs with loans prefer not to repair them no matter the severity of damage unless its totally cosmetic without mechanical damage. Unibody cars usually don't drive the same after a moderate side impact anyway. Plus I don't agree with how the insurance co. handle your claim but you're probably better off having it totaled than repaired. Like most have said already buy it back and part it out if you have the space and time to do it.
It'll be interesting to hear how your sistuation turns out!

im a bit quezzy after reading this whole story. if someone fucked me over this hard, either a) someone would be 6 feet under, or b) there would be a giant lawsuit against the insurance company, tow company, and the salvage yard...
i would never have the patience that you have. please teach me your ways
