Default HELP:clearcoat bubble and peel

I'm pissed........for whatever reason (probably a crappy GM paint job) the clearcoat on the roof behind the ttops is starting to bubble....then it peels. Now that the paint is exposed to the air, its going to get much worse very quickly. I read the recent post on here and saw that there is apparently some sort of service bulletin that GM has issued for 99-02 cars to replace and repaint the c-pillar in cars with this paint problem. Has anyone in the tampa area tried this? Let me know if you found a dealership that replaced it for you using this service bulletin. also let me know what dealership it was, who you talked to, and any other information I would need to make this work for me (the specific steps you took). I have a 99 TA with 50k miles, so obviously its out of the warranty, but i still want to see if I can get those bastards to redo it for me. Even if you aren't in Tampa, I'd be willing to drive for a free paint job. Thanks.

Print the service bulliten, call gm and talk with someone. Get their name and # and go to a dealership. Bring it all with you and hope you dont have to fight to get it repaired.

That **** happened to me, but I caught it early.

Still had to the dealership bodyshop mgr. to get GM to cover it. After I called corporate, they finally agreed to redo the whole paint.

My car was fixed for this last June. There is a factory TSB issued for this. You are good for 100K miles to have the pillar replaced.

Just an FYI that there is a GM bulletin for Fbody's (Firebirds with T-tops) YEAR 99-2002 03-08-98-001A WITH T-TOPS
Part # 10254708

Here is my original post about it on another board

thanks for the info.......I'm well under the mileage limit, so hopefully the dealership here in tampa will take care of it. I'm going to take it in in a few weeks. By the way, what dealership did you take your car to in WPB? I'll be over there a few times in the next couple months, so if they don't take care of it here, I'd be willing to get it done in WPB. Thanks again.

Schumacher on Okeechobee Blvd. Body Shop is located on Indian Road off of Okeechobee (Indian Rd is a left before the dealership next to the Texaco gas station)

You will have to go into the Body shop and see Kelly<---yes a Women is the Mgr there. She'll need to see the car in person and she is the one who knew of the TSB whereas the service Dept did not.

561-615-3360 <---body shop's # but only talk to Kelly she won't dick you around as the service writers don't know ****.

She can order the part for you and when it comes in schedule the car there for a good 4 days..........I dropped mine off on a Monday got it back on a Thursday.

For tampa take it to the Buick dealership down off of 301 and Adamo drive. I have used them in the past for my warrenty work on my car and they were great. You will know why to take it there when you see all the Z06's in the parking lot and the C6 that is there which is already set with a custom tune.

haha, no, if you would have gotten a good paint job, that would have been an anomaly. This is just good old fashioned GM quality

hey "pushinfreight", what's the name of that Buick dealership? Maybe I'll stop by there after I take my car into RevX next week.

The issue is not paint related. It's the materials used in the pillar that's causing the issue hence; the replacement of the pillar.

yeah apparently its the glue or something........thats why the problems form in such uniform equally spaced areas. Does that mean that even if you had the pillar repainted (not replaced), the problem would redevelop?

That's what I was told something to do with the bonding agents within the pillar. As you probably noticed whatever came up through the paint is greasy if your bubbles actually cracked open.

Mine was replaced last June and so far has been fine. If it happens again, I bring it back and let GM foot the bill to do it all over again.

Default Dealers in Orlando????

Has anyone taken their car to a dealer in Orlando to have this fixed? If so, who? From my experiences with the Chevy dealers in the area, I do not hold a high level of confidence that they will take care of this for me......and my car only has 32K on it (outside of the 36 month window though).

I do know that a friend had an SS fixed for this his was a non t top car. The TSB that I physically saw was for Firebirds years 99-2002 it said nothing about the Camaro.

I cant think of the name right off, if Jeremy is doing your tune or is at the shop he knows the guy who owns it and can tell you who to ask for since we have "non stock" GM products. All you have to do is just go east on Adamo from the shop and it will be on your right. It is maybe 200-250 yards from the shop.

Don't let them talk you into repainting it, the problem is with the glue used to bond the plastic panel to the roof of the car. If they dont cut it off and replace the plastic panel, it will be back.

Sorry to bring this one back from the dead, but was wondering if anybody has a downloadable copy of this TSB? Quarter panel got hit and the adjuster refuses to spec out a new panel, because he doesn't want the pillar skin to be removed (says that it'll leak because they won't glue it back right). My paint isn't bubbling, but as I remember, this TSB displays exactly how to reglue the skin and details exactly what kind of adhesive to use... Thanks.
