Anyone want to school me on handguns?
I'm looking for a decent handgun for the house but don't know a lot about what brand is best, style, caliber, etc and was wondering if anyone can shed some light on the subject.
I use to do some shooting when I was younger at ranges and I have to say I'm a decent shot but know jack about the specifics. Any infor would be greatly appreciated!
Handguns I had in mind were:
S&W Sigma 9mm pistol or handgun
Maybe a Glock but not sure what series

The sigma series of S&W is kinda cheap...cheap like 275-350. Probably some of the best guns on the market right now are the XDs from springfield and IMO the MP series from S&W. if it were me id get either in .40 or .45. Just go down to your local gun shop and see whats available. Bad thing is if you ask ten different people youll get ten different opinions.
Now for home protection, nothing beats a cutdown 12 guage.

best 9mm gun is the sig p229 according to the government b/c thats what they picked over all the handguns on the market for there employees.
but i would say its a pretty damn good gun it will fire full of dirt!

I own numerous handguns and like to shoot at the Hernando Sporstman Club at least once a month. I prefer assault weapons but this is another thread.
I think trigger pull should have a lot to do with choices. I just picked up a new S&W tactical 9MM and with a 2.5 lb trigger pull & it sometimes comes on to strong for a beginner or someone who will have limited use. It also can be startling on how fast you can fire a second shot and to the inexperienced this can be frustrating. Many people prefer the lighter trigger, but is something you work up to. The Glock is a great gun compared to the price of a Sig which I find so close in performance that I give the edge to Glock and there 5lb trigger. I find this a disadvantage when trying to fire a second shot. I just do not like that a Glock does not have a manual safety, other then that it is second to none and the only handgun I have 30 round clips for. The Glock is my favorite and I own more guns then I will admit to.
I went to the range last week and brought some new toys.
Go the gun range and try a variety of handguns before purchasing.

handguns are for CC. scare factor with CC is not needed because if youre drawing your weapon, by the book you should be prepared to shoot. i carry a fullsize 5" 1911 . good for two things... killing things and driving tacks.

Call me green but what do the abbreviations CCW and CC stand for?
I was thinking about a shotgun but I need something my wife can fire also. Don't think she'd fare to well with a shotgun but if it's addictive as everyone says I think I'll have a collection before too long!

id go with a sig p226. the one i have the barrols are interchangable between
.40 and .357 its a nice gun and good quality, has a safety too.
i dont recommend a glock if you have kids being that they dont have safeties and they are to easy to fire. dont get me wrong though its badass gun.
just my 2 cents.

The advantage of a pump action is that you'll probably never need to fire it. Everyone knows the sound, and that they'll have a hole in them if they enter.
Keep in mind - few people will ever hit their target with the first round when in an emergency situation. There's nothing like the spray of a shotgun to offset poor aim.
If your wife can't handle one, make sure you find something she can handle - and go to the range often enough with her that you are both comfortable firing it.
I can't recommend what to get for a handgun - my specialty is antique/reproduction muzzleloaders.

Can't beat a good old Remington 870 shotgun for the home. +1 for the sound of the action on a shotgun scaring turds. lol
If your dead set on a handgun and you're on a budget I'd go with a Glock Model 17. But as said, get to a range and shoot as many guns as you can!

And if you do choose a shotgun for the love of God please get some 00 buckshot or equivalent, don't fall for reading stuff out there saying to use birdshot or the like because it's family safe and won't penetrate your walls. Birdshot won't go very far into someones skin even from point blank.

my home is protected by a remington 870 short barrel with LE folding stock and a HK usp .45
