Default ceramic coating or just header wrap??

i just bought the PTK style turbo kit off ebay and beofore i just tearing down and installing i was wondering if i should just header wrap the headers and all the exhaust or should i spray it with the ceramic coating stuff they sell at the parts store, then wrap it?? i know keeping more heat in will help the turbo spool faster.. but am i just wasting my time and money or will it acctually make a differance??

The wrap will help but ceramic coating does not like having wrap over it.

Wrapped headers don't like getting wet very much either - it will help rust out much faster. If you don't drive in the rain, then it's cool.

If you do, then pay the extra money to get the parts ceramic coated the right way - at a plating or coating shop. The silver Ceramicoat is good to about 1300F and the grey and blacks are both good to about 1800F, if properly applied and baked.

Why do you say this? Will it not hold as well with wrap over it? I had mine crossovers professionally sandblasted and recoated, then applied wrap over them. Was this a bad call? I thought the idea here was to keep the heat in the pipes...

I think the point was that when you coat it and wrap it the pipes can't breathe and dry out if they get wet. If I follow the logic, though I would think that the pipes would get hot and vaoprize the water and moisture. That is my logic, I am sure it is wrong but I too am curious because I am planning on at the least coating my stuff

im going to get it all coated and wrap the super hot areas. i figur ill have it apart again befor it has a chance to rust and the heat it throws will make short work of any water in there

Skyhigh is right about the wrap holding in the moisture. I went with a ceramic place in town www.performancekote.com and have been very happy. They also gave me a 3 year warranty. I also immediately noticed cooler under hood temps. My vote is to get them coated.

Even when I simply used a single wrap around 1 header pipe that was coated, the ceramic flaked off and the pipe rusted within about 6 months of dry driving. Ceramic coating like to be exposed to air. Wrap overheats it locally and it fails, then you get rust. Originally tried wrapping my collectors for 'double' heat retention. Rust under wrap while the rest of the headers looked pretty good for the next 4 years.

This coating helps to prevent moisture from getting into the header wrap. Bob

So what works better for keeping heat in the pipes ceramic coating or wrapping the pipes? This would be for a rear mount turbo set up. I'm looking to do the y pipe and mid pipe.

Wrap with hi-temp ceramic batting underneath. You want it firm but not so tight it compresses all the air out of the batting. I got mine from Longacre racing.
