Default 8 sec. LS turbo engine buildup

I thought it would be cool to build a LS1tech motor with help and insite from it's 7, 8 and 9 second members. I tried a search and didn't find anything like this... SO...

I just got back from PRI and I'm amazed at all the cool stuff that's coming out for the LS series motors. I have decided to take out the 427CI BBC in my 70 Chevelle and build up a turboed LS motor. I would like to build a "best bang for the buck" motor that uses as much factory stuff available, as long as it will support 1000+/- hp. This is a street car with 3.73's, T400 and full weight that will have fuel injection and A/C. I would like to avoid the LSX stuff for price reasons and I'm thinking gen 4 stuff. I have most of this figured out on paper but was looking for validation. If I'm way off on my theories then let me know why. I will try and ask only a few questions at a time until it's all down on paper.

Now for the questions:
What block would be best? (iron or alum)

What stroke and rod combo will be best for a 4" bore, keeping the piston compression height in mind? What brand?

What heads would be best? (LS3, L92, other or aftermarket)

i would go with a lq9. you can get a forged short block for about 3500bucks. and i think if you are shooting for 1000hp i would go with an iron block (an lq9 is iron)

good luck with your build.

If you are talking 1000 rwhp then go with an lsx block. 1000 crank and basically any block will be fine, for weight savings and strength a ls2 block may be best.

My vote goes to Lsx block stock crank set up. and the new LSX gm heads look killer too.

for the amount of power u are asking i would really look into going with a 598" or 632" built NA 1000+hp BBC.

he said street car. why would he build an antique boat anchor for it?...lol.

I dont think you need an LSX block to make 1000whp. Maybe over 1500whp everywhere ive seen on here.

quite a few stock block 408+ cubed setups on here making that power. Do some searching.

I have a 509ci w/twin 4788's that will make over 2000hp. That is my limited mileage Pro Street car.

This is my unlimited mileage street car, I won't have a problem making 1000hp. It's not hard to do when you pick the right parts.

I haven't found the LQ9 short block in the GM book. Is that similar to the LS9? It sounds like something I want to look into.

LQ9 is same as LQ4 cubic inch wise (364) but has a little more compression and I think stronger rods. I would say a forged 402, 408 and a big turbo would do what you want.

Lq9 should be able to hit 1000 whp with no problems with a head with a thicker deck, like afr, or etp. On 6.0 heads it may be on the border line of pushin water.

If i remember right, a lq9 only weighs 70 pounds more then ls1..

Only some 6.0 trucks. The HD trucks got LQ4s. The Escalades, SS trucks, VHO trucks, etc got the LQ9.

So if an iron block is superior to factory aluminum in my application then, is there any prep work that needs to be done to it besides the usual machining?

Are you shooting for high 8s or low 8s? There would be a little bit of difference IMO.

+1
high 8's = regular iron block
LOW 8's = LSX block and 6-bolt heads

Reliability (head gaskets) will be an issue if LOW 8's is the goal for a 4-bolt setup.

I went on the cheap with a 6.0 block, stock crank, good rods/pistons and L92's.
