Default STS Turbo update

I just got a reply from STS turbo and got an update on their LS1 system. Rick said that they've just finished the prototype LS1 kit and are starting testing (assuming no problems) today.

For those of you who don't know, this is the somewhat unusual "rear turbo" setup: http://www.ststurbo.com

I can't wait to see some numbers. I know a lot of people have been highly critical of this project, but to be honest I have a good feeling about it. If it does what it needs to, it'll be perfect for a lot of people.

I like the idea but on the LT1 set up that turbo looks like it hangs low off the back. Looks like it could be damaged easily. Will the LS1 be similar to that set up?

I will be interested to see how the LS1 kit works out.

Is the routing of the tubing being designed with the 98-99 manifolds in mind or the 01-02 higher flowing cast iron manifolds?

I would be curious to see how that system works with 01 stock manifolds and a MAC offroad Ypipe exhaust setup.

What spec turbo are you going with on the LS1 kit and what is the CFM and projected max RWHP rating for the LS1? If it works as advertised and a good fuel system and Ls1 edit is used 600RWHP might be obtainable.

Cheers,
Chris

I have a friend with the LT1 kit. He is a tester and let me just say that this kit works amazingly well. He gained around 75RWHP on 5-lbs boost and the dyno curve was, well, there wasnt much of a curve...very straight and stayed high. Not to mention his AF was fat as hell! low 10's(A/F)! Here is a video I took of the car.

Yeah the LS1 kit is being tested, I hear it is working well...

Just a quick update for everyone: Rick said that there should be more to report by the end of the week. The good news is that he said that everything seems to be working well. He said that the performance seems very impressive, and that his first thought was that a new clutch would be a must. Hopefully, they'll have that thing on a dyno soon.

By the way, can anyone give me a little more information about the water/methanol injection system? Does it just help keep knock problems at bay?

I want to see maf flow numbers from idle to red line.

at sealevel would be prefered as well..

high altitude, it does not take much in the way of FI to get a decent power increase.

Ryan.

Well, I guess the turbo guys need a "powerdyne" too! Seriously, I hope the kit works out. Putting on a turbo shouldn't have to be the pain in the *** it is now.

I'd like to see before/afters on a stock motor also, not a purpose-built 8.7:1 motor!

Here are the results that Rick sent me when I asked him how things were going. STS turbo kit installed on the LS1 netted him these times:

12.1 at 113 mph at 5 psi.
12.5 at 118 7 psi on methanol (lots of spinning reported).

I imagine they'll have full results posted on the web soon. I noticed that on their page they have a pointer set up for the LS1 kit, but no page yet.

I would like to see them do testing with a full fuel system upgrade and Ls1 edit tuning on race gas with lots of boost. (15psi)

IAT readings would be nice too

Hmmm... won't the heat from the turbo be dangerous right next to the gas tank like that?

no way, the tank has a heat sheild on the bottom, I think the big muffler would cause more heat than the turbo
