Default More Details

Well I looked into this much deeper tonight after the auto parts shop replaced by belt for free Anyways put the new belt on and noticed a few potential issues with my kit.

First the belt is touching the machined bracket...pic 1 This would make the belt want to ride forward...just the failure I found on the last belt.

Second the alternator is hard into my cylinder head and valve cover...pic 2, 3

I found aluminum fretting from the contact. I'm sure this will take some kind of air tool to fix

Anybody else notice this kind of issues? Keep me posted....

I haven't got to run mine yet but I also noticed mine is very tight with the head and valve cover. I'm still in the process of relocating my fuel regulator since the alternator hits this. Are there any non speed inc employees running this alternator without problems? I'm starting to get worried.

You need to get a 1/2" shorter belt to keep it from hitting the bolts... mine did that when I had the tensioner almost maxed out... If you are just running alt. powersteering, and factory waterpump and crank a 68 is the perfect size.
Mine is not hitting the head/ valvecover at all... it maybe 1/32" off both... talking to speed inc a common problem is the spacers are on the wrong way( little part needs to be on the waterpump)... If you are only loseing one rib your doing good... im shreading two off mine.... with the belt shreading after about 5 miles...

Default Spacer Size.....

If I recall correctly my spacers where the same length. But with the issues I'm having this would make sense. Can anybody else verify if their spacers are the same length? I'm going to pull mine off tonight to check. Also I'm running the Goodyear PolyMax 68" belt. Really hope this is just a spacer problem.

both the spacers are the same length.. according to the machinist that makes the brackets they are 1 3/4" roughly.. what Im refering to is if you look at the spacer one end has been machined down making a slot in it... that end is supposed to sit on the waterpump and the fat non machined end sits on the bracket.

Take a look at pic 3.....machined down side of spacers are on water pump side. This is what your referring to correct?

How does the new harness get wired? It has 3 wires...2 smaller and 1 larger. My 98 alt has a single red wire going to it.

Just to let everyone know that the problem is solved and this is by far the best setup! Anyone having this problem just needs to shave a little off the back of the alt. It appears that the alt rubs the head a little bit pushing the alt forward.

Did you have to shave the alt or the one tip of the bolt? I had the one bolt end sticking out that I had to hit with the grinder.
