Default STS PPL Only! Turbo upgrade advice

Hey folks, I'm getting ready to drop in a new forged 370 shortblock in my '98 T/A, it already has a complete STS kit +Intercooler and meth. It is 4K stalled auto, currently has a T4 Garret .67 turbo with .81 A/R. I am looking for advice on whether to try and max this unit out, or pick up a larger turbo that it capable of reaching my goals (750-900hp). The larger units I have been looking at are the T-76 and T-78 units.

Can anyone who has experience in upgrading the turbo(s) on their STS kits provide in-depth details as to all that needs to be done in order to successfuly install a larger turbo?

I would prefer to stay with the T4 and not have to alter my current piping. Thanks

don't know if this pic helps...

You might want to go with a t78. I have a t76 that I would like to see 800whp out of with a built moter later on. I think the 78 would be better sized though an even bigger one might be needed.

All I did is run a new pipe under the axle with a new coupler on the outlet and intake side of the compressor. I added a hanger to since it starts to sag over time.

Here is how mine is setup.

Thanks for your input Silver Transam, "All I did is run a new pipe under the axle with a new coupler on the outlet and intake side of the compressor."

That helped the most, as I was unsure of what changes needed to be made in order to run the t76 or t78.

If anyone else has some information on upgrading the turbo on an STS turbo kit, please chime in, thanks.

The change is pretty simple, like Silver said. As long as you get a T4 turbo with the same outlet flange, they will bolt up right. If the compressor housings is different, do like silver said and replace the compressor inlet/outlet couplers.

Thanks ScorpionT, I'm definately sticking to T4 for simplicities sake, it hardly sounds complicated anymore. Wish me luck on the t76 or t78, whatever I can get my hands on first.

The TC's are easy to swap in...depends though if you have the 3" inlet cover or 4" inlet cover. If you have the 4" inlet cover their is NOTHING required. Straight bolt in and go hunting!!! We sell alot of the TC's to the rear mount guys...they love them.

Yeah, I meant to say rearmount turbo not STS, I am very much aware that Zombie and Ninetres have almost nothing from STS in their kits, and that all of their components are custom. I also know that you did Zombie's setup and a few others. I also mentioned DrTurbo because I know for a fact he is very knowledgable when it comes to turbocharging, be it front mount, rear mount, or STS. If you want to stay out of the thread because you feel the that the topic does not apply to you, by all means do so. It was not my intention to shut the door on all rearmount set-up guys, just because "STS" is on the topic.
