Default Help Me Please! STS Turbo kit?

I have a black 2000 z28 camaro with a couple small mods.

Alright Fellas, Im looking a STS kit... I need the pros and cons!

Currently I have -- Typhoon intake and throttle body, stock heads, stock cam. Pacestter headers, pacesetter y into a borlamouth exhaust.

Oh yeah I also have a built tranny with a small stall as well.

What can I expect out if the sts kit? Will it be safe? Do eventually will do heads and cam but I want power now and the kit im looking at is new with an upgraded garret turbo...

Any advice will help and be extremely Apreciated!

Make sure you read this thread and do a bit of searching before you dive in.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/forced-in...induction.html

I think the majority of people on this website will steer you away from the STS kit. A little searching and you should find plenty of information on the pro's and cons of the kit but I will say that turbo's like HOT exhaust gas and putting them at the end of the exhaust isn't the best idea. That said there are plenty of really fast STS cars so the system does work...but a front mount is still better IMO.

The intake and throttle body really aren't going to help anything at the horsepower level that the stock short block can handle. You would be better off with the stock exhaust manifolds than with the headers you have. The reason is that the manifolds hold heat in and you want the exhaust to stay as hot.

There is no reason to put heads, cam, and a turbo on the stock short block. It can only handle around 500rwhp reliably and there are people that have hit that with properly matched heads/cam and bolt ons. I know plenty of people will disagree with me but IMO it is not worth the money to boost a stock ls1. If they are only reliable to around 500rwhp and there are people who have hit that NA then why spend the extra money for boost? Maybe I'm a little biased since my short block only lasted 850 miles with boost.

My advice is to get some nice heads and a decent cam. The mods you have already done would complement a NA setup a lot better than a turbo.

In my case, I looked at doing heads and cam and making about 450whp then you are pretty much tapped out on the stock bottom end also, So I chose to get my turbo first to iron the kit out .. make 500 on the stock bottom end, and still be able to build it (cheaper than the turbo kit) and just up the boost later. I just chose to not be limited at first and buy the more expensive things first (I build my own rear kit see sig)

with that being said I do plan to move it up front when I build the bottom end. But I wont have to re buy anything I don't already have.

I am running the sts kit with the m6 and If I was to do it again I would have probably gone with heads and a cam. Auto is a different story. I think it would work great with an auto trans. Don't forget you will still need injectors and fuel system either way. And if you go boosted you will need an intercooler. I tried it without , It was scary how hot the iat's got. Their customer service sucks also. from my experiance.

After all the time and money, I realize forced induction is truely a challenge. More possibilities of things to fail, more work involved.. I'd say if u only want 450rwhp go with h/c/i and maybe some juice for that added touch. If you want bigger power ie 500+ - Forced Induction is great but honestly it will cost some money.. Even with the gas economy being worse for H/C/I i think ud be just as happy.. especially with a nice lope.

my suggestion is take a spin with someone that has the STS and another with h/c and see which one makes u smile more lol
