sts style oiling question

sts style oiling question i am doing some mid mount turbos. aps style. i am looking into oil scavenging system. i am able to find some good pumps out there and will be returning the oil up high into the valve cover.
my questions
pump control. my thought was to use the fuel pump circuit to control the scavenge pump along with a timer relay that will keep the pump on for a minute or so longer than the fuel pump. how does sts do it?
check valve. on one site i see some check valves for sale. a small one for before the turbos i think and a biger one for after the pump. are these needed? i could see the one post pump if i was pushing the oil into the pan below the level of the oil but i am not.
