Default HP limits of 317 heads

I was talking with my engine builder and he told me that if I go ove 700rwhp that I will lift the heads all the time. He said to hit 800rwhp I will need afr heads. I was just wondering what the most hp you guys are making with the 317 heads. I have a 2006 gto thats about to get a tsp 408 and a tc76 sts kit. with 72 cc heads it will be a 9.5 to 1 cr. I plan on running e 85 once it gets built. I dont need anything more than 800 but is that really the hp limit without pushing water.

Subscribing / free bump. I plan on doing a 347 with big turbo going for 800 rwhp with 317 heads. I hope they will hold with strong enough bolts hahaha.

317 for 700RWHP is fine people have take the 317 to 1000RWHP at that point you will be pushing water even with a good tune. It all come down to tune ive seen people lift a head at 500 Hp

If you stay under 800 hp 317 with ARP studs will be fine but if you have the money get the better heads. cause you are at the limit

Because of the smaller Engine you will be closer to pushing water at the same HP then the OP with the 408

I hope you mean studs not bolts. But its not the studs that are the weak point The alum deck of the cylinder lifts in the middle causing the weak spot not the studs

Very good tuner / meth injection helps/ mixing race gas when you know your going to be playing hard. Making car lighter less load on engine/ getting full boost little higher in rpm range

You could do the Trickflow as cast which are still better flowing but cheaper cause there not CNC. Which doesnt matter as much with Fi but you still get the thicker decks.

I think TFS as cast is like 1600. 317 Free if owned already or 400 to buy. cost deck head to clean up 100 bucks new springs 300 valve clean up maybe 200 so 600 to 1k in work to a weaker head.

TFS 1600 sell stock heads 400-500 TFS might only be a little more after every thing.

My car made 920 rwhp on a mustang dyno on stock unported 317's with valvesprings only. Above 750 rwhp or so I would do a aftermarket head with a thocker deck to help.

From what we have seen, about 800-850 is the "safe" limit to the 317's when parts prep has been right and the tune is good.I have seen 1100rwhp with 317's but didn't last too long.Proper suface finish really makes a big difference-alot of mills have alot of tilt in the head causing a concave surface when milled. We use a head with almost zero tilt. The gaskets used makes a difference and proper torque on the fasteners. We are going to try our double oring setup on a set of 317's shortly and see how far we can push them with no problems-so far we have made 1700+ hp on 4 bolt ETP castings-that's 300hp more than with the mls gaskets would hold.

just oring your block, i have 317s an 88mm and pushed 21psi so far. no water pushing, though i do tune my own car timing is in the teens. 21psi was on pump gas 93, build a lower compression motor and pour the boost in.
