Default Update to my BS3/Backfire issues...

I wanted to start a new thread and will be locking my old thread so people can learn and take preventative measures...

https://ls1tech.com/forums/forced-in...ne-season.html

BS3 has been repaired. Also learned two nuggets of info relating to my problem which I want to share.

My problem was a blown out IAC and secondary chip. This is caused by charging a 16V system with it powered. I always try to kill the main power switch on the car when charging (everything including BS3 is on the switched side) but must've forgot it once. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T CHARGE 16V BATTERIES WITH THE BS3 POWERED

Coil dwell with 16V systems (including the Caspers volt booster) DO NOT USE MORE THAN 4ms DWELL TIME. Upping to 6ms dwell is a common thing done at these power levels, but this is only for 12V systems. If you use 16V battery or up the alt voltage to 16V at WOT via the casper volt booster then set max dwell to 4ms.

BS3 is adding this info to their FAQ section since it was definately not common knowledge until now...

I ran the default 5.99ms coil dwell for two years and hundreds of passes with a volt blaster, ~15.5v WOT. Never burned up a box or had any other issues.

you run the risk of burning up coils with that dwell and voltage...not hurting the box...just passing info from BS3 directly...

Never hurt my coils either, still running my original 98 coils

Default is 6ms though so I assume most people just leave it, just another thing to experiment with I guess..

15.5V is lower than the 16.2 or so I run...maybe its a fine line...

Who knows, I worked with high power RF systems for years and its amazing what a little EMI or a voltage spike here and there can do to electronics. A race car is not a friendly environment for electronics thats for sure. One spark on the battery terminal from an older transformer charger can hurt a lot of stuff..

I thought this was common knowledge, you should never run ANY fuel injected vehicle while on the battery charger.

I have my set of 160's, marked as they came out of the car, I want to flow them, and see where they are. Might be interesting to see how they compare.

I never did (at least intentionally)...thats whats bugging me...I really think it was related to that faulty charger I had...at the time...I had my BS3 power wires hooked directly to battery per the instructions. after that incident...I moved them to the switched side of my kill switch...

Brian,

Good for you now you've found the problem. I'm sure you now have a renewed interest in your car. Sometimes problems like this can sure hurt the moral. Well at least you know you have some good friends here on the board that offered you some encouragement. Good luck getting into the 7's!!!

Is 16v system required for that power level?
