I should be making near 10 psi on the caddy with the magnuson setup with the 2.6 pulley on the stock shortblock. Spraying methanol to keep it out of the danger zone. Anyway it's my daily driver....and like the vette, I beat on it daily and no problems yet. Me thinks you ought to try some methanol. I've got about a gallon if ya need it.

I still need to borrow that boost gauge from you soon to find out exactly how much boost it's making.

Just come on by! It's sitting on the shelf somewhere.

Yeah, maybe a meth kit is in my future, but I think Blacker should be able to tune it so that the motor can survive without meth.

We just attempted to tune it this morning. 542 RWHP/488 RWTQ SAE. Injector duty cycle on the greentop 42#'s hits 100% at 5300 RPM.

Had to stop. I'll be asking Santa for a set of 60#'s and we'll go back to the dyno in January.

Many thanks to Blacker. He's been a huge help. He continued to make some safe adjustments to tune out all knock (had 1 degree of KR on a couple pulls) and did the best he could despite the A/F going lean up top due to lack of injector.

Great numbers for a stock bottom and having to stop early.

Let me know if you need a good place to buy the 60# injectors new.

my 98 ss, runs low at 10 psi, ussually 14 psi. water/meth, arp studs, 317's, th400, 2.73 gears. its been that way for about 4/5 years

99 hard top camaro, stock short block with z06 cam, th400, 300 gears, atleast 10 psi....often 15-17 on more octane, 10.20 133, 5/6 years of service.

2004 ss silverado 10 psi daily , for 3/4 years now stock 6.0

2004 express awd van 5.3 low is 10 psi, but its been running around at 15-17 on 91 octane for months, big intercooler, water meth, 317's, arps...4l80e and 6500 lbs. Makes around 700 crank hp

Just did a 6.0 sand rail....s475, low is 10 psi spring only, zo6 cam, stock heads with studs.

theres a few more.....but I dont know exactly where they are now.

all are stock manifolds, intercoolered, water/meth, , most have 317's, all have arp studs, all tunes are similar....

ive got about 1000 miles on my stock shortblock with 317's at 9#s making 542hp. hasnt hiccuped yet (knock on wood) and i beat the **** outta it every time i drive it. was gonna add another # here shortly but the recent cold weather has caused traction problems so ill leave it for now. hoping to get about 565-570 on 10-11#s

The f-body procharger 8-rib kit is advertised at 8psi kit, but I'm making 10-11psi with the 7.65 crank/4.5blower pulley combo on a stock ls1 with headers. Although I am running a rich tune on E85 so things are safe.

Thanks Jeff. Yeah, I am glad to be making some progress. I basically had to limp the car around (with a couple exceptions when I had some MS109 in the tank ) since upgrading the pullies. Almost there.

That's my pulley combo and I'm at 10 psi. Also with headers, FLP long tubes.

Horsepower kills stock engines, not how many psi.. (bad tune as well)

10psi could make 700whp on some crazy efficiant (sp?) setup or 480whp on a not soo much one, haha.

550-600 is the 50whp "fine line" to dance around basically.

its not hp....its knock that kills. thats why the smaller bore 5.3s live so long. small bore is less prone to detonate.

Well. Interesting. I am so so close to finishing up and starting my car. I talked to procharger and I told them I have a 7.25 sdce 8 rib crank pulley with the standard procharger 8 rib bracket setup. I have a 4.50 blower pulley and was hoping around 8#s. You guys with the 7.65 pullies are making 10#s. Lol what the hell is that gonna make me? 12+?

On another note im on E85 with twin 340's in the tank and 81# injectors. So I should have the fuel covered. With a safe tune does my stock motor have a chance? Sorry to hijack.

No hijack. It's an open discussion. You have it backwards about your crank pulley. A larger crank makes more boost. It's when you go smaller on the headunit pulley that boost goes up. A smaller crank pulley with the same size headunit pulley will make less boost. If Procharger told you to expect around 8#, they are probably right.

I am not an expert, nor even very experienced at playing with boost, but I think E85 will help greatly. As someone pointed out, it's not exactly the power number that tends to kill a boosted motor, it's detonation. Yeah, the stock rod bolts are a weak link, and some people claim a factory LS1 shortblock is only good to 600 HP, but more often it's a detonation event that takes out someone's boosted motor rather than the specific power output being to blame.

Seen quite a few local boosted stock motor builds. All had ringlands go bye bye.Have a few souvenirs in the garage or maybe finallly threw them out. They made good conversation pieces.

One was around 8 to 10psi. Other one the guy messed up on the boost controller and didnt' understand it and pretty much instant kaboom bye bye ringlands. So nice to see so many guys running pretty high boost and hp levels on the stock bottom engines for so long. I always say run stock bottom fi if you can afford to have the car blow up and afford to rebuild it if necessary. If its not your only transportation and having it down won't matter that much then feel free to experiment but remember the stock pistons won't take much detonation at all. The ringlands are fragile things on the stock pistons.

Personally didn't put my twin kit on my stock engine even though had to wait quite a long time to afford my 408 and for it to finally be build and shipped. But at least now have more piece of mind. Still stock engines can be had for pretty cheap these days so guess its really not a big deal if you do kill one, or two..

Being conservative on timing and afr is likely the main thing in keeping the ringlands intact.

Yep. The stock hypereucraptics don't tolerate much detonation at all. Especially #7. Had a buddy with a P1SC on his stock shortblock and on a real cold night he did a couple "passes". He thinks it hit 10.5 or 11 psi. By the end of the meet the motor was toast. Went over to his house a few days later and we pulled the driver side head first (on purpose due to the rep of #7). Sure enough, #7 piston had a crack in it and a chunk was missing from the crown.

We are very carefully tuning mine to try and avoid that scenario. A/F is 11.5, and actually a little richer in some points along the RPM band under WOT. We couldn't get it perfectly flat, but it's close. Ended up roughly 2.3* less timing compared to my tune at 8 psi. That's a generalization as we tuned it cell by cell.

We got all the fuel we could out of the greentops. Bigger injectors will be required before I can unleash the car.

I went with the 4.50" blower pulley. My original 6 rib kit was good for 8 psi, when it didn't slip. I went out a couple weeks ago with a race gas/Shell 93 blend in the tank and did some research to find out what my new setup is doing... 10 psi. With the race gas acting as a safety device, I did not hear any knock during two initial highway pulls performed to verify boost. I thought the 4.50" pulley would keep my peak boost at 8 psi... probably needed the 4.63 pulley to do that. Anyway, the higher boost and much better belt wrap feels really good.

Fast forward to this past Saturday night. I linked up with a buddy and we hooked up his laptop and data logged. Possibly due to slightly different weather and probably due to my race gas now being 2 weeks old... the motor showed knock from 4800 rpm on up. To just throw a quick band aid on there, we added 6% fuel and took out 1* of timing (down from 18* to 17* now) from 4800 on up. My stock MAF is pegged, so an 85mm is on it's way. We plan to load the appropriate MAF tables and do a complete retune on the dyno once the new MAF is on. We'll see what A/F it likes to make power and keep it out of detonation. Probably 11.5-ish, but we'll see what it wants to do.

Anyway, my question for the community is, who is running 10 psi or more on a completely stock LS1 and what did you do to try and ensure the motor will live?

Thanks!

Was daily driven on 11.5 psi on two turbos. Worked fine. No issues. Needed alot more fuel at that level(heads and cam ls6 with two 67's). 12 degrees of timing,.. trough a truck maf.

780++93 octane...and a GREAT TUNE. Which is key to anything

There was also a really neat crack in the cylinder wall, that block was done. It was an issue with the tune not the boost though. MAF was maxed so it happily assumed nothing was different.

With your bigger MAF as long as you're getting good signal you're ok. Specially tuning it in cooler weather. I can't wait to see you run it now. Get the fuel!

I should be running 13psi with meth. I got the blower all back together and its stitting at cunningham motorsports waiting for her new tune. You should be fine on 10psi. Get a meth kit for extra insurance and never run shitty gas lol. Keep her from pulling knock and keep timing decent and you should be fine. I ran mine on 9psi for over a year now and shes doing just fine and i beat the hell outta her lol.
