Default BBC vs LSX blocks

With paul major switching over to the BBC I wondered what advantages the BBC has over the LSX with my goal of driving to the track running a low 9 sec pass and driving back home. I know any well prepped LS motor would do the trick but does the BBC still hold any advantage in a approx 427 ci motor with boost?

Funny how the BBC, th400, and pg still rule the roost

The only advantage with a BBC is cost. The LSX motor still cost a lot to build.

With a BBC you obviously have more choice's in larger CI. I think this is why Paul Major made the switch, for alot more CI. If you already have a F-body it would be alot easier and cost less to stay with a LS motor and run low 9's as opposed to switching to a big block to achieve the same goal, plus you would get better gas mileage.LOL!

A properly setup big block is still some coin. Topend and valvetrain is real critical.

Very true statement. But he wants to run low 9's and old school BBC will cost much less to hit that goal then a LSX motor will. At least from my experience.

I would day the big difference in cubes. The biggest cu LSx motor is a 500ci ERL, Warhawk, or RHS block. While 700+ci is possible with a BBC, plus there are heads that can feed the big block while heads are just coming around that can feed a 500ci LS motor.

This is a clean slate guys(sorry i didnt mention that in the op)

1984 G body regal 12k original miles, bucket seats, man windows, man locks, body is straight as an arrow.

I cant believe that a BBC would be cheaper but you guys have many more years under your combined belts.

I would believe it's in the cylinder heads. While there are some very nice LSx heads out there, a set of some big chief style heads are no comparison combined with the extra cubic inches of the BBC.

No replacement for displacement. You can build a very affordable 540 BBC that will hit your goals. It would be an iron horse at that power level too at reasonable RPM.

LS motors are cool, but pricey right now.

You can get a 502 block and build a short stroke 427 (although why keep it so small?) with a huge bore, slap some great heads on it and decent supporting bits and keep it under $5K-7K for the motor. With the LSX, what I'm seeing is that $5K gets you a stout shortblock.

Other than a modest weight penalty, what's not to love?

Oh yeah, and there's parts galore for stuffing a BBC in a G-bod.

if you have the money and want to go FI I think LS is the way to go with its tuning capabilites compared to a BBC. But if you want budget and good times BBC is probably the way to go. I think LS gives you more pimp factor (my opinion) at car shows because it looks cool and people like the new tech, just look at all the old cars rolling around with any ls motor with corvette fuel rail covers.

At the same time you could go to a junkyard and pull a motor out of an old suburban or something, freshen it up, bump the compression, and add killer heads. Thats the combo for a killer street car with monster torque.
