Question How to choose gear ratio with current setup?

ok so im new to forced induction ive had a motor car and a nitrous car but never a forced induction... i ran into a friend that is selling an aps kit with everything i need all i have to do is take it off his and put it off mine and im seriously thinking it over hard. i know forced induction typically means different gears (lower) than what you'd run with a all motor setup so my ? is how can I determine that? for awhile it will be a bolt on and cam only car with the twin kit then eventually get a built and forged motor but thats down the road. the car WILL remain a 6 speed. i have a midwest chassis 9" on order and cant decide what gear ratio ive been thinking 3.50 but guys what are your opinions thanks.

What tire size and goal in the 1/4 a 3.50 would go nice with the six speed, But it all boils down to what u want in the quater.

3.50 gear would do it. I run 3.73 lol I need to change them 110mph rolling burn outs are not fun. The lowest I would go is a 3.08 gear, That is the gear im going ot run for the mile next year.

im running 3.70's and 28" tires. i have no experience with anything else on turbo but i like it alot.

im coming from 4.30's and 26"s on the street and 28"s at the track and it is a world of difference

Some auto turbo guys tend to like really low like 3.08 which are good for turbo 400 swaps. I personally hate lower gears like that off boost . I have 3.54 it was lowest option strange dana 60 comes with. It was ok in my six speed and now is fine with the 4l80 swap and 3400yank.
As for reducing gears to get traction guess it works but there are other ways to do it.
Looking into pricey but interesting variable traction control for my car next season.
Anyway with six speed would stay with 3.42, 3.50 possibly 3.73 tops.

Are you talking street or track..
Street..HA HA..Traction what traction.. If you want to hook on street tires like et street or m and h drag radials will be mandatory. Nittos ha ha..toyo radials..well maybe..any normal street tire...ha ha ,michelin ps2....well possibly some traction.

Two things might help in that department besides tires..boost controller that can ramp in boost ,eboost, ams or possibly variable traction control. I am looking into one of those from racelogic. Wish someone would make a plug and play harness for it.

Last week I ran a 10.001 in zombies car. I ran using first and second ONLY. It runs used $25 ebay gears that are 2.75's, on a 275 60 -15 mt et street radial (28).

It also drove out to the track at about 80mph in third (th400). The car weights right at 3900 with me in it. Now, traction is a non issue really, they dont get traction on the street, compared to a track anyways. And if you run on a marginal track, then a lower gear (higher number) isnt really going to help much. If you drive it short distances on the street (or never in some cases) and you run on a well prepped track with lots of big tire cars, then a lower gear will obviously help your et.

If you run on a crap track, and drive lots on the street, or the tenth or maybe 2 tenths doesnt bother you...then a higher gear (lower number) is what you want.

For me, I went a 1.49 60, leaving at 3900 on the 2 step. Would it go faster with different gears....yes if all the conditions are met(or with the 2 step higher). We just dont see those conditions very often. So for the quest for a low dollar built fast car with true street car drivabiity we tried the 2.75's and it works well for the needs.

zmbiess car....=

25$ gears, (1500 $ 9 inch)
370 using used $200 pistons, stock crank, stock heads, z06 cam
$1600 in a rossler th400
rear mount turbo that I did....

Comparablly the other way...=

2400 $ 9 inch
cammed, ported head atleast 370...and with heads and cam thats maybe another 1600$ on engine price with new pistons another 400.....so about 2000 more there.
$4200 on a 4l80e .....
$500 on a boost controller...

Thats a huge financial difference, fr what amount to virtually no difference in the car except those rare occasions that they run on a real good track.
