Money wise I think it would be close but the LTX would likely win out as the parts are usually less expensive. Machining a SBC is about as cheap as V-8's get. You have to consider he would have to source a LSX motor and trans, get the computer&harness,k-member etc...... Then he would have to have that motor machined depending on his goals and the motors condition.

If he has the extra cash for all of that then it might be a cool swap. If not, looks like alot of extra money spent for little gain.
I get what you are saying about the LTX being cheaper for parts. SBC parts are probably the cheapest to buy and they are everywhere. Either way a built LTX or LSX with the right turbo will be a ton of fun......BTW, I have no right to be cocky. My car still isn't finished!!!!

No worries. Theres more than one way to skin a cat and its not always about money or whats easy. If that was the case I would have sold my car a long time ago I think alot of us are in varying stages of partially constructed cars here being that its winter and all. Im one of them as my motor is sitting in my shop as we speak. Should be back in there in a few weeks.

This website is full of guys with LT1's. Not seeing your point.
the lt1 is a great motor in stock form, or slightly modded...their computers suck for high hp/boosted applications, the optispark sucks for high rpm, and they are more expensive to build to a comparable strength level...you will need to toally build the LT1 in order to hold the boost and power that a $400 5.3 will handle.

Ive been there, done that...spent 10k on a supercharged motor for my 94 TA that in the end I couldnt sell for even the price of the motor, and was no faster than a head/cam LS1. LT1s break at the first sign of boost over 5-6psi, mine broke at 4psi...tossed the ringlands on 3 pistons.

if you wanna go fast on an lt1 and keep driveability, spray it. if you want forced induction, itd be cheaper to swap in an ls1, plus itd probably help your resale if you ever wanted to sell it. you could return it to a stock LS1

You are talking to a guy with a very well built LT1. Thanks for the education! You make me laugh really. I forgot the mighty LS1 owns all and a SBC(an LT1) is just a worthless paper weight. Obviously you dont have a clue if you are having issue running 6 lbs of boost... What planet are you currently residing on again?? There are COUNLTESS LT1's running 9's all day long with 20lbs of boost without anymore issue than your godly LSX.

The only thing that seperates a LT1 from a SBC is a opti, and reverse flow cooling. A properly built SBC will take 800-900hp all day, boosted or otherwise. Guess all those old school builders, Lingenfelter comes to mind, must have been full of it. I hope nobody listens to this nonsense.

And further I dont have an opti, I have the best ECM in the world, AKA "LS1 and coils". 24x, not sure if you have ever heard of it. Thank god for that or my **** box LT1 motor may have just thrown a rod. Try again....... Oh you drive a mustake, explains alot of your FACTS.

i think blks point is to return this car to complete origional someday if he chooses. maybe hard to do if anything fails i.e. crank rods pistons. so whether lt1 sbc bbc lsx origionality is the point. and btw my 2c: 5.3s are silly cheap and hard to ignore bang per dollar and disposability.

Ive been there and done that...the "mustake" is a far better chassis for drag racing that the 4th gen...parts are cheaper, easier to work on, about 600lbs lighter...etc. Stuff a complete chevy drivetrain and you have all the positives with none of the negatives. I built an LT1 in the past and it never hung with any of my LS1 cars. Plus the fact that I work for Ford, and can still drive the mustang to work without anyone knowing whats under the hood

http://victoryracingengines.com/gallery/mattmiller

by the time you go thru all the hassle of swapping over to all LSX electronics, you might as well swap the motor to an ls1, not only for the fact that parts are a dime a dozen...remember theyve made ls motors for 13 years now opposed to the 4 of the lt1. plus they put them in trucks, which lowers the cost considerably

i loved my lt1 when it was stock. it ran like a raped ape...as soon as it was boosted, it went 11k miles before it blew the motor, all at a relatively safe 6psi out of a powerdyne. lt1 pistons just dont like boost

I thought lt1 and ls1 both had identical stock hypercrap pistons. I have for sure seen stock lt1 pistons with blown ringlands. Obviously any serious build with either lt1 or ls1 should have forged pistons as main priority.

I still love both the lt1 and ls1 engines. Both have their pros and cons. LT1 weakness was the optipuke ,worse in non vented form. But now we have msd upgraded optis and some other opti eliminator kits. Some lt1 also were bad for intake manifold leak. I had a few of those on my various lt1s.
But I like the sound of the lt1 a lot ,both thru various exhausts and its just a quieter engine. The ls1 are famous for piston slap issues. My current build has slap but of course its a forged build up with pretty loose clearances. My stock ls1 engine had slap cold and still never really went totally away warm.
Also both engines have good selection of speed parts available. Actually think some lt1 parts are bit cheaper..

I do intend I think to eventually procharge my 96z after build forged 383 or 396 engine. For now be happy with just heads, cam, headers, bolt ons and some spray.
New msd opti as well. I would also add that in addition to sounding better to me both exhaust wise and just running noises the lt1 looks much nicer to me. That ls1 engine is just a fugly thing and really needs some engine covers to look better.

IF you "built" your LT1 and it never hung with any LT1s all I can say is it must have not been done correctly. I really do not see your point with pistons. Stock, yes the LT1 piston will not take hardly any boost whatsoever. There are many aftermarket pistons available that will take all the boost your can dish out whether it be in an LT1 or LS1. There should be zero difference there. Taking a stock 5.3 over an LT1 if you can get the LSX for a good price, sure it might be a good idea if you dont plan on building the LT1. IF you do go the LTX route and run a high dollar forged piston and other assorted parts there is no difference really between the LT1 and LS1.

No offense but your "BUILT" LT1 was hardly making any big numbers. There are many others out there in the 700-800 or more range not having issues with pistons. Any of the people who have had problems usually found out it was a bad tune.

The parts for an LT1 are a dime a dozen and as I said are usually cheaper than that of the LSX. Swapping to to the LS1 electronics is fairly simple. Once you ditch the opti I dont see your arguement when the engine is forged. Either will work very well if the power adder (if so desired) is setup correctly. It is not always as cost effective as you think to just throw in a 5.3/. There are associated costs that are not considered when swapping and often times building what you have makes more sense and will bring you to the same power goal regardless of engine family.
