Default Turbo manifold design.

Ok I`m tossing back and forth what way I wan`t to go in my attempt to make a new turbo manifold 3in log or header style? I`m not saying that the 2.5in log can`t support lots of HP I just want to expieriment so PLEASE NO FLAME WARS. If it boosts performance it was a good upgrade if it don`t improve performance then the feud that the 2.5in log is a restriction will be settled. My question is, Would there be a substantial performance advantage from going header style over a well designed 3in log manifold. What would the turbo experts consider a well designed street turbo manifold design.

The ongoing persuit of HP.

Well as i said in the last post..... i am sure alot of people would be interested in your results, myself included.

I say if you are going to do something, go all the way... that being a tubular style header. Look at all the high power turbo kits out there.... they all use tubular headers, then of course straight into each turbo for twins or Y right before the turbo in the case of a single system.

Check here for some helpfull links:

Goodluck and please post up any pics and results.

No i`ll be going to a T76 and i`ll position the manifold so i`ll be able to fit an actual 76 instead of the hybrid that TT sells. Do you guy know how hard it is to set the radiator so it sits straight instead of tilted back. How would cutting out the piece across the top of the radiator and welding in a new one, farther forward like harlens setup affect handling?

The 2.5" log can carry more HP than the stock LS1 Block can even handle. So, in my opinion, what's the point in building a tubular manifold? How much HP do you want to make??? There are plenty of log style kits out that make huge power also.
However, if you feel like making a tubular manifold and a y-pipe from the passenger manifold, by all means do it. And if you are going to "go all out', then you might as well use Inconel and twin turbo's. Hey...it's not my money.

I think the ideal setup would be equal length headers and merge collectors, but there isn't much room for that.

Next best would be unequal length individual tube headers, merging just before the turbine inlet. (Thats how I build them).

INTMD8---Who built your turbo kit??? Looks very nice-what size downpipe is in the pics? Is that a 76? Did you move to a 4" downpipe?
Thanks for the great info, awesome thread.

I built the system, thanks for the compliment. I work for Speed Inc. (www.ls1speed.com)
.

The downpipe in the pics is 3.5. Turbo is an Innovative GT80. I built another similar 3.5 downpipe, except the wastegate doesn't dump right into it. The wastegate pipe follows the downpipe until the area of the trans crossmember. Downpipe steps up to 4inch, at which point the wastegate pipe merges in. From there it's 4 inch up and over the axle with a 4in Magnaflow muffler. It will be back on the dyno again soon.

Damn both of them sets of manifolds are sweet hopfully mine look as nice. Harlan how the heck do you change the plugs on your car and where did you relocate the coils to?
Did you notice any adverse handling after cutting the radiator support and relocating the radiator?

Rob I Know the log can support a lot of power. But i`m curious how a tube manifold will effect performance. Thanks for all the pics and tips it helps alot. Keep them coming.

You guys should just start over mining for ore. Talk about a scratch build up. This is what this is all about. Major Kudos to each of you. Makes my kit look like sissy pants.

Jusyt my 2 cents. If I was to make a complete system, which I wont...yet..would it not be beneficial to have the wastegate piped with their own exhaust pipe as opposed to dumping it back in?!!!I guess if its gonna dump back in it should be a few feet from the turbo ideally, if at all.

It would be beneficial, and I've since done this. (Separate wastegate exhaust until the trans crossmember area).

I think there would be less gains doing that in your case, having twin turbos/downpipes, and the gates are dumped back in after your downpipes step up to 3in.

Ok, turbo newbie question here. What does moving the wastegate exhaust dump point down stream have to do with anything? How does it help? I understand what the wastegate does, but I don't understand why moving the dump downstream helps and having it dump close to the turbine hurts. I'm going to start a turbo motor in the coming months and want all the info that I can get to help me along the way.....
