someone wants to use a cheap single t3 turbo on a stock ls1. it says .70 ar and has a divided exhaust housing. ill try to get pics of it to identify it. the flange looks so small, how is all the exhaust gonna fit through it. is that gonna make it boost at idle? i dont know much about turbos, so is this just a really bad idea, should it be a t4 turbo?

i dont think its ideal, but will it actually starve/restrict the motor for air at 6000 rpms, or will it only make 50 hp more than stock. someone has to have done it before. will it make 10psi at 1500 rpm?

Useable?

What does that mean? A friend just used a T70 .84 turbine t3 on an LT1 with a Camaro cam in a 3000 lb car it didn't get in the 7's in the 1/8

The turbo makes good boost and seems strong on street with no traction but with traction engine doesn't breath

Don't waste your time it will be total crap! Boost quick and quickly choke the engine

ok, so the plan has changed to a t70 from modular. thanks for your help in changing peoples opinion for me. heres some update pics, now just gotta get the new turbo, cut off the flange, and put on the right one. got the radiator mounted and decided on puller fans, so while im at it ill make sure i have more room for the downpipe.

who is doing the welding there ?

from the looks of his welds he does not seem to know what he is getting himself in too when he welded cast iron manifold to a stainless steel pipe

if you really want to use that turbo then use a huge wastegate. That T3 flange is way too small though, use an undivided T4.

your gonna wanna make sure and make a mount to bolt that turbo to the frame rail that way your manifold arent supporting all that weight, with the long piping from the passengers side u got alot of leverage on there with that weight your gonna definately have issues with welds breaking. check out my brace for mine on my 95' lt1

and as far as the size of that T3... its a little small its gonna make boost instantly and peak at like 3-4000 maybe lower. i had that same size turbo and a honda civic that made 436whp at 24psi. and it was maxed out so in referance to a ls or lt it power but fall on its face after 3000

elias, they are not cast iron manifolds
805selite, i am going to put a brace from the block to the turbo, need to figure out how to get some flex pipe in between turbo and intercooler
but like i mentioned before, i started this thread so i could have some other people chiming in that the t3 wont work. i was given this turbo and told to put it on this car. i have never done anything with turbos before. after i started, i learned some and realized this wasnt going to work. now i was able to convince others that we shouldnt waste our time, and get a better sized turbo. gave a call to modular and we will have a t70 in its place really soon.
originally i planned on using truck manifolds flipped forward and up. but whild we were waiting on some flanges, i found my old 98 camaro manifolds that i cut the flanges off to make an ls1 swap exhaust, that i never used cuz stainless works started making the longtubes.
so that is 2.5 stainless tubing we had laying around. and i was bored so i started to mock up some pipes off those manifolds.
so far we have $70 in this turbo kit. once the new turbo, ebay intercooler, and some other little things show up, i think we will have no more than $1500 in the turbo side of things.

and were looking to get at least 500 to the wheels. its on a bone stock 98 ls1 that had 17000 miles. i think we need to do springs and pushrods, also rodbolts and headstuds were recommended. anything else we should do to this thing?

you could use two of them, that will help and should be capable of 550 rwhp with really fast spool.

You need a fuel system, At least a single walbro and larger injectors, preferably a boost referenced adjustable FPR. You need a BOV, Rodbolts and Headstuds should be ARP. You need some good MLS head gaskets. No point in doing springs if you are using the stock camshaft. You will need a good tune, and I would use a wideband in the car at all times as insurance. You will need an air filter to fit on your cold piping side. Need a turbo blanket, possibly a different radiator(Griffin) and you may have to stand the radiator straight up to make room for some good fans to keep it cool. If its a 6 speed you will need a different beefier rear end and the stock clutch isnt going to cut it, You will need something like a twin disk or a monster clutch. Its its an A4 you better pray it doesnt break everytime you stomp the gas. Subframe connectors, and I wouldnt mount the torque arm to the transmission unless you dont mind breaking the tailshaft off on a good launch with sticky tires. I'm sure there is a hell of alot more stuff involved that what I am listing man but be warned, Its a hell of alot more in depth than just slapping a turbo on and welding up some pipe.

Sure you can get a turbo ready to bolt on for 1500, its the other 5-10 grand that people dont realize they are going to have to end up spending to get the damn thing to work right.

Agreed about this for sure. People seem to get the turbo hooked up, brag about how cheap it was and then take it out for a cruise and realize they dont have enough fuel running to the block, their camshaft isnt the proper size to maximie the turbo in use, their tune is way off, welds start to crack, hoses break, rear ends bust and the suspension always seems to leave the rear tires spinning instead of grabbing and moving out...

Welcome to the world of going fast!

glad you got the t70, you will be much more happier with the results. Just keep posting about the build and these guys will tell you if you are doing anything wrong for sure. Hope you get it together quick!

yeah, sschoeffler must not have paid much attention, he mustve thought this was an fbody. its a 67 impala. 4l60e. there was a pic of the radiator, and most of the fuel system. none of that is an issue. of course arp, was i gonna use stock headstuds and replace the stock rodbolts with more gm ones? and springs and pushrods should be done to a stock ls1 anyways so it can rev a little higher, so why not this one?
