Default 5.3 Turbo ???S

With the 5.3 and the 317 heads and a Z06 cam, how much boost would yall say would be safe or on the border line on pump gas? Im thinkin 15lbs from a MP t70 with a decent size FMIC. And what kinda power should that make to the ground through a th350 with a 2800-3200 converter and a 8.8 ford rearend with 3.27 gears?

12-14psi should be OK with pump gas and the 317s. I would guess about 470-500 through a loose converter. It would be 600 with a locked converter.

What year 5.3 would be the best to start with? And what the most they have held on race gas with a spot-on tune? Just curious.

In the turbo aws van, it has its oem 5.3 still in it, running about 18 psi daily now on 91 octane with water / meth at 50/50. It runs 317's with a z06 cam. Its at the end of the walbro 340, and at the end of 60lb injectors. At 6500 lbs it runs high 12's at 3000 ft da at 107 mph. I think it works out to around 700 crank. It lives on the water meth and runs a giant intercooler (stock 98 12 valve ram cummins intercooler) We talked about it yesterday. I ve had two blower cars in the last month rll through that both were inthe 200 degree IAT area on a run. I have one down to 125-130 now....The other will hopefully get down to atleast the same area of maybe if I cross my fingers get lower then 100. One runs 6 psi, the other 10.5..........the van.....18 psi...61 degrees IAT at the end of a full run. Starts at 100-110, drops to 78 at the onset of water, then goes to 65 almost immediatly, then slowly goes down to 61 DEGREES.....I will never own a blower car on purpose. I know they can be fast, but what a bad design and pita.

5.3's are great.

That one has a turbonetics 72, 1.00 divided housing (coated). Anything will fit if your motivated enough. I doubt it but maybe with some cutting. It runs a devils own kit off the 2 bar map, (sd tune)

If you got the intercooler in there, the entire front end would be intercooler.

Could you possibly get me some deminsions on that intercooler? And what is the "devils own kit" and "(sd tune)"?

Pm me , and Ill have a shop guy measure one of the intercoolers. I think I have two more.
Devils Own is the alcky kit name.....you can search devils own and find their web site. I ve bought enough from them now I m a dealer also. But thats not saying much, Im a dealer for most alky companies because I ve tried most of them.

Sd tune, is a tune that changes the operating system in the oem pcm and gets rid of the maf all together. The fueling changes (and timing) are based on the map sensor (boost). A 2 bar sd tune reads to 14.7 psi....and you can easily fudge above that alittle, but its way better then using the maf for fuel calculations when you can max the reading at around 4000 rpm. Everything above 4000 is a guess. With sd, it gives more tuning control when in boost.

SD is short for speed density, which was used by most oem manufacturers at some point. GM used sd on 93 f fbodys, 92-93 vettes, ford used it in mustangs etc etc....now we use it for better fuel control.

On my 5.3 I ran 15psi + a 50 shot of N2O. Never had a problem for 3 years.
