Default Front mount MP70 turbo, a few questions

Known:

Single MPT70
A2A intercooler
stock LS1 short block with 75k miles
truck manifolds
T56 transmission
LS7 clutch

I know the stock cam works pretty well for a turbo, but I figure I might as well look into a turbo cam since I want to do some valve train upgrades anyway. Are there any off the shelf turbo cams that would work well with this configuration, or is something like that better off for a custom grind?

I see a lot of people going with the 317 heads on their turbo setups...is it a worthwhile upgrade in their stock form (non P&P) to lower the compression and run more boost? That would put me somewhere around 9:1 CR?

An upgraded fuel pump and injectors will be included in the mix (and of course dyno tune). What kind of RWHP would I be looking at without the heads/cam upgrade and a moderate amount of boost? With heads/cam and kicking up the boost level? I suppose I'm trying to figure out if I'll meet my horsepower goals with just the turbo setup, or if I should factor in heads/cam as well. From what I've seen reading on people with similar setups, ~500 RWHP from the addition of the turbo?

Thanks!

1. Speed Inc. TU1 cam

2. 317 heads YES sir(upgrade springs, retainers)

3.I would say 500hp will be no sweat with your turbo along with the heads and cam. Just make sure your tune is spot on and cross your fingers!

Just finished a manifold-based build with a MP T70. Stock heads, mild Turbo Cam (can't remember off the top of my head but I'm thinking around 230@.050 and just around .600 lift) Comp springs. Made 515 RWHP @ 8psi through a T56 and a 12-bolt.

i would recommend the LS6 cam. i use one in my build and i get about 18 in/hg of vacuum at idle which when paired with a good PCV system will provide great oil scavenging for your turbo. you're gonna float your valves if you use stock springs so i would suggest getting a set of 317s with PRC duals and ARP studs. also you will need a dual Walbro setup and maybe 60s as turbo setups need more fuel to cool the burn where NA setups do not. 500 hp is easily achievable if you think out the right combo. an MPT70 is also a great start

I was running stock everything with exception of valvesprings and pushrods on my first build and that was a MP T70... LOVE the turbo, and it was running great, I just never made it to the dyno before I came up on a great deal on a TSP 370 and 4L80. Im running a TR224 in it and love it. Check out my build thread in my sig if you want, maybe a few pictures will help give you some ideas. Good luck!

The MP70 will get you into the 550-600rwhp range if you max it out. I would also reccomend the ls6 cam for price and the 317 heads with upgraded springs. You will need twin 255 pumps and 60lb injectors to keep up. You might want to spray some meth too for safety. I had pretty much this same setup in my truck on 5.3L and a lq4 and they both performed well.

That sounds like a plan, what springs would you reccommend? Comp 918s? Patriot Golds?

Right - Expect 600ish to the wheels at most on the mp70. With that in mind don't go too wild on the cam. Any overlap and it will run out of steam long before 600.

If you run the ls6 cam you could get away with ls6 springs. I ran them for a long time and never had vavle float up to 13psi which was about 590rwhp. If you have the extra cash you could go with a good set of double springs like PRC but they are not completely necessary.

I agree, the mp70 does max out arond 600 and the ls6 cam will get you there. My truck made 555rwhp unlocked at 12psi with that setup and it was about out of steam. I ussually lose about 40rwhp unlocked on the dyno so that would have put me right at 600. The power will peak pretty early on this turbo so you won't be able to spin very high.

I actually blew a seal in my t76 so the mp70 is back on my forged 370 right now and it is a bad *** street turbo. Spool is damn near instantanious with this turbo and it makes good power.
