Default Vortech v9 gtrim

Hey guys, there is a local guy selling his vortech v9 gtrim kit. I was thinking about buying it and putting it on my track car. I really dont want more than 600rwhp so I thought this might be fun. My car is already a Head and cam car with an ls6 intake and long tubes though, it as 5.3 heads so I imagine I would have to run a higher octane fuel. There is a gas station nearby that sells e85 i was thinking about getting larger injectors and running e85 with this setup.

Right now here are the mods to my ls1
cam f13 230/232 .595 .585 110+4 LSA
prc stage 2.5 5.3 heads
ls6 intake
1 7/8 longtubes
3.5 inch dual straight pipes

This set up put out 400whp and 370tq on 93 octane

If I add the v9 what could I expect? This is strictly a fun/track car btw
would probably just add larger injectors and e85 then get a tune
also what size pulley/boost do you think I could run?

you might have to get a new cam. im not sure how your current cam would do on a boosted car.
and make sure your fuel system could support the added power you are shooting for.
i assume you have a stock bottom end? with the g trim i believe it is limited to around 600whp. but im not positive on that.
is the kit aftercooled?
as for boost and pulley sizes, that depends on a couple different things.
i run a 2.75 pulley and i see a solid 8# and maybe more, but at that point, im too busy looking ahead of me.
i put down 465whp and 466wtq WITHOUT a working aftercooler, and full exhaust.(aslo supporting fuel mods and things of that sort.)
other then that, my car is pretty much stock. and my injectors are pretty much maxed.

The Vortech's for our cars are discontinued. I recently bought a Vortech blown car and I'm having a difficult time. It has a FMIC with 2.5" pipe. It's not making much boost, but the FMIC is fine. My shop thinks the 2.5" pipe may be inadequate due to the pipe length which is due to the Vortech mounting location. Vortech is of no help because everything is discontinued. If I can't get it working right I may have to find an A2W intercooler somewhere else or a Vortech one on eBay. From Vortech you either force feed 200* air into the TB without an intercooler, come up with a FMIC system that works, or use an A2W aftercooler. I'm still holding out hope that they'll find a leak somewhere that explains the loss of boost, but I'd look for a Procharger if I were you based on the problems I'm experiencing.

Yes the kit this guy has is an A2W IC.

I was wondering how my cam would perform under boost, I don't really want to swap it out LOL if anyone knows how my cam would be let me know please

My fuel system should be good im running an external walbro 255, I do also have a spare so I could run double pumps if I had to.

this kit was dicontinued in the begging of this year if im not mistaken.
i think your seeing less boost then you may expect because of the fact that all that air flow has to run though all that piping. how many # do you see? altitude also effects boost loss.

the rod bolts should help, as ive read that anything around 500whp will create problems with the stock bolts if im not mistaken.
ive had my v9 g trim on the car for a couple years without any problems.
it looks good, and get the jobs done. people see amazing numbers from these kits. ill also ask my friend how well that cam will respond to boost.

I'm seeing 10-11 psi at the charge output and 3 psi everywhere else (throttle body, brake boost vacuum line that feeds my bpv and gauge, and the gauge itself inside the car). I replaced the FMIC with a straight pipe temporarily on the dyno and I saw the same result. The mechanic manually pressurized the plumbing and saw leaks at the EGR gasket and the PCV valve - both are being replaced and it will then be re-tested. I'm hoping that gets it up to 6 or so.

What is your setup LSpeed1? A2W, FMIC, none of the above?

you must have a boost leak or somthing then. let us know what the outcome is.
i have a2w aftercooler that came with the kit. the only reason why its not working rightnow is because the waterpump for the aftercooler went bad. but i should have that fixed this weekend.
i was thinking about going frontmount, becuase it seems like a2w is a bit of a hassle, and i think a fmic is a simpler setup, but i havent decided yet.

Everything I read suggests FMIC for street. Reasons:
1) It's simpler
2) It's better (unless you're adding ice) -- here's why IMO

The air that is hitting your water intercooler is not able to reduce the heat to the air's temperature. I believe 70% efficiency is good for them. So you're heating your water by the 200* charged air and trying to cool it with the ambient temperature air, yet your water can't hope to get to the ambient temperature because the water's intercooler isn't capable of it.

Here's the data that supports the above:

Data on temperatures, intercooler effectiveness, etc. - http://www.procharger.com/h2hdt.html

thanks for the info.
ive heard from a ton of people that front mounts arent really that big of an advantage though. thats why im still a2w rightnow. although ice could be the turning point in a a2w setup.
where did you get the fmic and all the piping for it?

I just recently bought the car with all of it in place already. I know the FMIC came from eBay and it's a Procharger 2-core standard 3", although the plumbing is 2.5".

Rjparth,
You should go look on ebay for some 3" IC piping, I believe CX racing offers a variety of bends in "kit." You could pull off your old set up and use it for reference to mock up a nice 3" one. I bet that 2.5" plumbing is causing some restriction. I run 3" pipe to my front mount IC with my g-trim and so far it has been pretty efficient (9.2lbs at 65k rpms) Also, the leaks in your pcv and egr are probably causing a problem. Do you have a freeze plug in your ls1 intake? Thats what I have as of right now, I have been checking after each time I take the car out to make sure that plug is still seated in my manifold. Let me know when youn get those kinks worked out and get some new #s

Your set-up should be pretty efficent with the g-trim, not sure about the current cam though. Maybe pick up a set of 42# or 60# injectors if you don't already have one of the two. The Walboro should be fine, I have the single and also added a Kenne Bell Boost a pump to ensure I don't run out of fuel. If your base is around 400rwhp, I'd guess you'll be in the 550+ range FI. What pulley is on the blower now. If its the 3.12" I'd try and look for a 2.65" or at least a 2.75" with your current mods, if your hoping to see around 8lbs (FYI).

I personally agree with rjparth's info, and feel an air to air is more effiecent on the street. My car is all street and I got a real deal on a base vortech g-trim tuner kit and decided to incorporate front mount IC. It seems efficent, but I have nothing to compare it to since I never had the aftercooler. You could definitely do the fmic, it just will take time to fab up the plumbing. I feel like it is worth it because once you mount your air to air your basically maintenece free (just periodically check to make sure all your silicone couplers are tight) vs. having a pump fail on your air to water along with other electronical issues. (IMO) Either way you decide to go, you have a pretty impressive set-up as is, minus the current waterpump issue. Good luck

thank you. ill keep you posted.
but going frontmount, wouldnt you have to relocate your battery?
what kind of intercooler do you have?
and where di you get it from? have any pics of your setup yet?
you could deff. fab up ic piping from that site for sure too.

and to the op, from my understanding, that cam is not idea for a boosted car at all.
with boosted cars, the more lsa you have, the more boost friendly, in a way.
your cam is a strictly n/a type cam.

Cam isn't perfect for sure, but it will work fine. Alot of people over think this stuff, but it will work fine and the rod bolt only become a problem when you start turning a lot of RPM's. I made 600rwhp with a G-trim Vortech back in the day and beat a lot of cars with it lol!

Sweet guys thanks for all the info!

Yeah I know my cam isn't ideal, but it will work like Inspector12 said.

I guess I'll put this whole set up together and see where it takes me, if Im not happy with the performance I will change out the cam in the future. But like I said I would be content with 550wheel and I dont want more than 600 due to reliability. Im thinking with my baseline at 400 it should be able to reach my goals well hopefully lol
