Default 5.3 cam for boost

There is so much stuff to sift through on the site that id like to see if anyone can point me in the right direction.. Plan is to use a stock 5.3 with about 70000 miles, running around the 10-12 psi mark with an air to air intercooler. going into a 65 gmc panel that weighs about 4000 pounds, ive seen alot of guys talk about the z06 cam swap. was wondering exactly what year cam would work the best? 02 ish? I seem to be having trouble finding a z06 cam all the way up here in canada but seem to find the camaro ls1 cams quite frequently are these a good alternative to the stock 5.3 cam? will they work with the cmp sensor etc as i know diff ls variations had the cmp sensor either in the back of the block or the front cover. any other cams bside the z06 that would work good?? what kinda valvesprings do you recommend for certain cam and that kind of boost?

the 02 zo6 cam is what most people use for a budget build however im goin to be using a ls9 cam because it was designed for forced induction and is basically the same as the lingenfelter cam, and also its only 100 bucks brand new from sdparts.com or gmpartsdirect.com. you can google the part number. should work much better than a z06 cam and the z06 cam is like 250 new and u cant find a good used one for cheap.

and as for springs id use the pac springs rated for 650 lift there decent priced. or on ebay right now theres some lunati springs that are a pretty good price, i also plan on running 1.8 rockers because it will take the ls9 cam to .600 lift.

Or you could use sdparts.com all around since we deal both GM parts and aftermarket parts, and we have the LS6 cam, LS9 cam, and PAC springs in stock!

I can't find the LS9 cam on your page, whats the specs on it?

EDIT: I found 211/230 .562/.558 ~120 LSA? How would that work on a 5.7 turbo build, out of curiosity. If its $100 brand new thats a pretty sweet deal. Does it have the cam sensor trigger or is it LS7 style?

I just tried searching 12605527 at www.sdparts.com, and it said no matches. So I tried www.gmpartsdirect.com, and it came up for $95.18.
I'm not about to buy it, from any seller, but that's what I found just now.

I'd say the '01-'02 LS1 cam would be better than the '01-'04 LM7 cam, IF you're going for supercharging. For turbo, I'm not so sure. I'd try the LM7 cam first.

my 5.3 is a 2000 so i was told when i bought it. got it complete from pan to FI and most brackets and accesories for 350 cdn. im going to be running a turbo, its actually off of a 6.ol ford diesel. so the ls9 cam is equipped with the cam trigger ring on it and will be a direct fit?? as for using the stock am i have heard there is alot of hp to be had from just a mild cam upgrade and stock springs are rumoured to have valve float at about 8psi and aroud 5600 rpm.

A turbo from a 6.0 diesel is going to be way too small for a 5.3 gasser.

just wondering how that turbo will be too small? a 6 liter diesel puts out more exhaust gasses due to the huge compression numbers and will easily make 35 pounds on that motor. I have used the same turbo setup on a 454 bbc with amazing results. motor pulled great to 6ooo rpm and made more than enough boost for that motor. Anyone else have an opinion on the turbo? i know the diesel only pulls to about 3000 but it seemed to work awesome on that bbc

so to answer my own question and others people perhaps, an ls9 camshaft is not a direct replacement for the lm7 or ls1/ls6. If you want to run the ls9 cam you must use a front cover off of an ls9 or ls2 i believe that has the cmp sensor in the front cover and extend your sensor connector etc...

correct. will need the ls2 timing chain setup and ls2 front timing cover along with sensor and extended harness.

although the 02-04 ls6 cam has the reluctor ring located at rear of cam core since its Gen III. direct bolt in to your engine. no need for any other parts to make work

I'm doin a 5.7 turbo build with the ls9. Ye u do need the ls2 timing chain kit there's some in the parts section from yank for 62 dollars for the chain and sprockets and u need to specify 24x or not. For ls1 u need the 24x. Also u can get the front cover kit that comes with cover sensor and eerything for like 140 at sdparts.

you guys are brave runnin a stock timing set with a boosted motor i converted my lm7 24x/1x motor over to the newer 58x/4x jus so i could run a 6012msd and hav better resolution. i used a brand new ls2 cover that came with sensor/harness/bolts/gasket i picked up new offa ebay for 55 delivered, then a jp performance ls7 4x billet true roller double chain set from texas speed, and of course grade 8 cam bolts over the stockers.im at 155lbs seat/450open using beehive elgin springs.
