Default head selection for FI big block

I posted this in the sb/bb section first and got no response so i figured id try it here...

im debating on which style heads i should use for my pro charged 468 big block project. I am leaning towards a bigger oval port head over a rectangle port head for this build. I wont really be spinning the motor past 6500rpm and need to try to keep some volatility at lower rpms as this is going into a 6000lbs truck. im looking to put down around 700 at the wheels to start with some room to grow. The intake im going to be running is the edelbrock pro-flow xt.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Yellowbullet.com would be another place to ask. My last BB had stock ported oval port heads 8 years ago so I can't help you.

are you wanting iron or aluminum heads? you can make 700rwhp with just about any head on a 468 if the engine is built properly

If i can afford it i will be going aluminum when i buy them. and 700hp is what i want to get at least to start with at the wheels. The motor will be all forged internals and i would just use my stock heads for now with a little bigger valves as they already have some work done to them but they are 100cc heads and i dont think ill be able to find 100cc big valve heads to swap, so i would have to swap out pistons again too.

I must be blind crazy man.
Anyway heres a bit of info that may help, ive build a big block 454 A couple of deferent ways the last couple of years.
Iron block 9:1 forged bottom end, comp cam the first time up its was done with the oval heads procharger 9 pounds boost, RWHP690, not much room to grow, ovals just dont breath well.
Second time up, Howards max torque, little bigger cam with good street manners 260-272-680-680 LSA114, Patriot rectangular open chamber design heads,9-10 pounds of boost RWHP 890 ,820 RWTRQ at 6200 and still pulling strong over 6500 with plenty of room to grow, the best part is the 650 torque numbers are stupid at 2700 RPM in a 68 camaro
Hope this helps

The biggest limitation in factory BB heads is the exhaust side, even the oval port intakes can be ported to flow very well.

While not the lowest cost, you might want to look at something like an AFR 335 CNC head. These should flow near 300 cfm on the exhaust side with your "small" bore engine. Beware these heads raise the exhaust port about 3/8 of an inch and can cause header clearance issues - kind of depends what car they are going into. Thick deck on AFR heads is also a plus in boosted application.

Best place to get BBC info is over at Chevelle forum - these guys assemble all kind of interesting things. If you have not purchased your rotating assembly yet, you really should consider going 496 - cost is very similar. If you go solid roller, CNC aftermarket heads and 496 you could get close to your horsepower goals without the Procharger.

personally i would run a rect port head -you really won't loose any low end. But the Brodix RaceRite rect or oval port heads will easily make the power your looking for both flow over 330cfm at .600 lift and they are fairly cheap and well built

Thanks guys I'll prolly go with a rectangle port then I have already ordered my intake (oval port) but it's on back order untill the beginning of January so I will call and change it to a rect. Port. I'm pretty sure they offer the edelbrock proflow xt in it also. Im just hopping it will have the torque I'm looking for still. (6000lbs truck and prolly won't push it much over 6500) also I'll be running a hydraulic roller cam as the block comes factory set up that way.
