Default Forced Induction + Cats

Those that don't feel like reading my excuse skip to the last sentence in RED

Camaro has been catless since 05' and I can honestly say that I am over it. I don't live in emissions free Florida anymore where this isn't really to big of a deal. My car won't pass emissions here in California and that doesn't bother me a single bit.

The 20 - 30 Hp loss of adding cats doesn't bother me either. 15#'s through a 370 with nitrous has plenty of go for a grocery getter!

What does bother me is any car within 200 feet behind me on the highway or street can smell fumes and I hear all about it every time a friend follows me. To me this feels like a cop attractant and the last thing I want is to get sent to a state ref. CHP would have a ******* FEILD DAY if i poped the hood..

Oh how I miss the days when I was still millitary and was exempt from having the car registered in California.

My Question to you guys is What Cats/high flow cats will last in a car that makes 750+ rear wheel on nitrous and boost?

I want the rasp and fuel smell gone!

its in the tune , i have aftermarket cats and im procharged and you smell a little richness . What about buying a new catted y pipe for your exhaust and just selling the catless to someone who wants catless?

I really don't know of any cats that will last a long time behind a forced induction engine. You might look into the Magnaflow cats. Bob

Really? Like what is considered a long time? 10K miles? 1000 miles? This has me curious now, because I have the ARH high flo cats and will be looking into FI sometime in the near future.

10k miles is probably how long they last. Back at the old shop we would always find bits and pieces of cats behind the dyno from customers cars. Normally they'll come apart and you'll never really know it unless the particles create an obstruction. Bob

I have the SLP high flow cats and I am procharged. I just plan on replacing them once they go bad. I don't drive the car that much though, so i'll only have to replace them every 2 years if they last 10,000 miles. I have noticed a smell coming from the car thats probably the cats going bad.

You can clean up fuel smell quite a bit playing with injector timing. Also cam overlap has a huge affect on raw fuel smell.

Thanks Bob. That's not bad then. I'm cool with that. At current mileage rate, that would be about 5 years time for me. LOL I just put them in to help with Rasp.

You're welcome, the cats will help with the rasp and they do clean up the fuel smell. 10,000 miles in 5 yrs means you won't be going through much fuel... lol Bob

interesting, my car has been FI for approx 60,000 miles (100,000 total), and has had cats on for 99% of that. no issues. I tried catless for about 2 weeks but the stench like the OP is talking about killed that idea real quick. (stock cats from the factory)

Good point. You are correct. 6psi. Was as high as 10 but only for a short while.

I know that feeling oh too well... lol... You might want to consider a set of Magnaflow metallic cats, part number 59959.

My car still has cats on it as well. The fuel smell is only notice able sitting at idle for a little bit...it's not too bad...deff noticeable though. I honestly don't think they'll last very long...there's going to be a decent amount of pressure going through them...especially on the hit.

Seriously? Your car was LOUD AS HELL! I would never have guessed you still had cats?

I ran 630rwhp with stock exhaust and cats. Car ran a 10.5 at 10psi and a normal tune. Within 3000 miles, the cats were shot. I lost a lot of power on the dyno and the power fell off at 5700rpm's. Replaced them with another set of stock ls3 cats. Car blew them out again.

I'm not sure about hi flow cats further back with headers since I have not tried it, but I won't run cats on an FI motor ever again.

Seek an alternative fuel, such as e85 for a cleaner burn.
