mast LS conversion pan question
hey guys. may be kinda a dumb question but i need an oil pan for my 5.3L. i was looking at the pan from mast and was wondering if it would need mods for turbo use? from what i read i think i may be able to run it out of the box but i want to make sure before i purchase. Thanks
What do you mean by mods for turbo use? I have the mast pan and I am using it on my turbo build. The only thing I did was remove the oil level sensor and welded a -12 fitting in its place for turbo return. The pan has provision for oil cooler and oil temp sensor. Its a really nice piece.
we had a guy local who did beutiful tig work but he seems to have disappeared and he was very reasonable. i just figured if the pan could work this way it is one less job to have to do as i need a pan anyhow. you have any pics of yours?
The drain for the Turbo in the sensor location is not a good idea, that sensor is always submerged unless oil is low, thus triggering the low oil light. The drain needs to be higher than that to ensure oil doesn't back up into the Turbo. There's no need to weld for a drain on these pans, just drill and tap for an npt-an fitting and use thread tape or other sealant.

turbo iroc, are you saying i cant use one of those -10 fittings for an oil return then? i was sort of thinking the same with the sensor location being too low but it looks like one of the -10 fittings would be high enough.
I think those fittings above the oil filter are for an oil cooler feed and return. If that's the case then no you wouldn't be able to use it as a Turbo drain because they're both under pressure.
^^^ Thats correct, those ports are for an oil cooler set up or oil filter relocation. It would actually force oil into the turbo through the lower return on the turbo if you tried to use it as a return. Big no no. Those fittings at the oil filter are under pressure.
maybe i am wrong, but to me that does not make sense. i would think that one would be pressure. if both were pressure then the oil going to the cooler or remote filter would just sit there not circulating. i would think pressure would be on one side pushing the oil through the cooler/filter then back to pan. no? both sides pressurized would fight each other causing the oil not to move. or, if both of those are pressure then you would have to install two returns if you were using both.
