Default Need input on boost motor

Hey all,

I'm prepping my car for FI and need to build a boost motor. I'm looking for input on component recommendations and builder recommendations. Here's what I have as a general idea:

stock cube
factory crank
forged rods (brand?)
forged pistons (for 9:1, brand?)
Thermal coat pistons
rings (Total Seal?)
~stage II heads (TEA)
Cam (mild turbo cam)

Here's the kicker. I'm moving to the People's Republic of California and will need this motor to pass emissions in stock trim (stock exhaust, AIR, etc). I will have the turbo installed after I register the car in CA. Sooo, I'm particularly interested in a cam that will work well in turbo and N/A AND pass emissions.

Help a brother out.

Thanks

As far as i know, there are currently no kits on the market that are C.A.R.B approved.

There are some s/c kits that are.

And on the Motor side of it give Chris or Brian at AP Engineering a call about the motor.

Thanks for the input. It seems I couldn't have been more UNclear

I know the turbo kit will not be CARB compliant, I'm looking to get the motor put together that will pass emissions naturally aspirated. Once it passes, I will have the turbo installed, I just want to build the motor so that there's no need to change anything other thsn the addition of the turbo. Step number one is to get the car together and get it registered. After that, I'll worry about CARB every two years, even if I have to remove the kit temporarily...

I'd sure like to hear your recommendations for a boost motor, Brian.

Thanks,
Mark

Stock cube- I am 348ci, 3.905 bore
factory crank- I have stock crank just polished
forged rods (brand?)- Eagle 6.125
forged pistons (for 9:1, brand?)- Diamond -8.6cc boost pistons
Thermal coat pistons- Sure go for it I'd just do the tops
rings (Total Seal?)- Dunno
~stage II heads (TEA)- I have 69cc 6.0 heads that flow 299/220 with 2.02/1.57 valves
Cam (mild turbo cam)- Once you get into 230 through 240 durations you need to be careful to pass emissions, too much overlap is key, try to kee the overlap to whatever minimum the cam manufacturers reccomend

ss427,

Its a catch 22. If you build the motor for boost and you lower the c/r , your NoX emissions go up ( or is it hydrocarbons ?) . Either way, a low comp motor with a turbo cam wont pass cali emissions.

Passing Cali emissions is kinda hard. You want to be careful what cam you
pick as most cams won't pass. What a lot of guys in Cali do is go get the car
smogged and then after passing change the cam from a stock to whatever.

You can try and ask the cali guys who have cams and see if they have passed.
Then go by what cam they have. Little advice, if and when you do go get your
smog done and are a little worried about it passing, take the car on the fwy and
let it rip. Then take the car to the smog shop with the cats red hot. It'll help
kill a lot of emission and help you run cleaner.
