Default Is a forged crankshaft really needed?

I am in need of some help on a decision. I have just a bare block now and of course money is always an issue. I plan on going turbo in the future and putting down about 500-650 rwhp. I am going to be getting forged pistons and rods, is it really needed to get a forged crankshaft or anything else forged while I'm at it or can I use a stock crankshaft to save some money? Where are my weak points? Thanks

No...not needed at that power level.

Lots of people making a lot more power than that on a stock crank....

At that power level the stock crank is fine, I wouldn't even think twice about using it. As for other upgrades, it's always a good idea to do head studs and main studs.

In the LS world and that power level, the machine work is more important than the choice in parts.

You can go past that mark with the stock crank with good machining. If the machining is poor you can really hurt some parts well below that power level.

I've been told that the stock crank can withstand over 1000hp or 1200hp. Can't remember which, but my intention is to hit 700+whp on a stock crank with forged rods/pistons.

Thanks, that should save me a lot of money. Is there anything else that would be recommended to do besides forged pistons, rods, and stronger bolts while I have it down to the block. And what should I have done to the block, I bought it already honed with new cam bearings in it. If I buy a used crank will I be able to just drop it in?

If you buy it used, I would take it to a machine shop to get checked out just to be safe.

stock crank is fine as everyone here has mentioned

if money is an issue I would look for a complete stock 6.0 motor, do a cam pkg, rod bolts, head gaskets and studs. This will handle 600ish HP with no issues.

823whp 877tq @ 20lbs on the stock crank, forged dimond pistons, eagle rods, head and main studs, hi flow oil pump, and YT 600 valve springs. The rest of the motor is stock! and she keeps making power.... GL wit your build, keep it simple

maby i'll try a setup like that and have your kind of luck. How many miles have you put on it since that setup?

Which is extremely impressive!... It needs to be mentioned though that it was also a dry sump, aluminum rodded engine.

A little off the subject, but is a 5.3 crank the same as the 5.7?

even more ot here, but what is the SLP oil pump good to on my ls2? Im planning on a 370ci setup with oem crank with arp fastners, and a pt88 billet single setup along with quite a few other items. Is this oil pump a christmas ornament with my plans here, or can i still use it for what im doing with this? Im shooting for 850+whp.
