Default A question on Turbo Header Durability

Ok, here's the thing, right now, I have not a whole ton of money and wanted to make my own turbo hot side. I was hoping to see if anyone had any experience with mild steel turbo headers. I am making them from 16G primaries and collectors and 3/8" flanges so not quite as flimsy as 18Ga. Now, I realize these wont be as durable as a set of stainless ones, but as long as they arent going to crack and fall apart right away I don't mind making a few sets. I actually kind of plan on it being my winter project every year to try and tune em in and make em better, thats actually part of the reason I am not jumping right in with stainless or some other more exotic material (that and my tig welding isnt quite to the level I need to make headers) Also, would 2000* ceramic coating help me out at all? Thanks, any input would be appreciated.

Considering the Ohio Boys have made 2000hp with truck manifolds and a single turbo with an LSx..... why would you even want to make your own headers if you are on a budget?

Just make a suitable crossover and be done with it.

mild steel is fine, and used all the time. i'd use thicker flanges, though. at least 1/4".

Just use S10 304SS with a proper weld and you won't have a problem.

And once I have these things dialed in, I will definitely do that, but for the moment I can build a set from mild steel for under $100 a pair, once theyre pretty and tuned then we move up to the more expensive stuff. Its jsut more a matter of, will these ones fall apart really quickly or will they hold up for a year or two (once again ideally, theyre getting rebuilt every winter, maybe two if theyre coated.)

Right now its all sections welded together to make bedns etc, hopefully soon I'm going to find someone with a bender and make monotube primaries.

I ran mine all year uncoated and they have been fine, and look exactly the same from when it hadn't even been fired up.

I havent even had a gasket leak.

it depends on the metal used.

first go round is standard exhaust tubing 16 GA mild steel, if these prove out to be awesome, then I'm probably gonna replicate them in stainless or inconel.

I had planned on doing mine with inconel... then I saw the price, and I used stainless.

I have been making turbo log manifolds for the z31 300zx for many years now. I always make them out of mild steel. I offer a life time warranty on them against cracking in or around a weld. I have never gotten one back. However, I don't use anything as thin as 16 gauge though. Everything I use is sched 10.

There are up and over manifolds available. No idea what these are off though. It's a pic I found ages ago where someone used them for a turbo build.

They seem to work quiet well really. Could even be tempted to go down that route myself

When ever I have seen cracks in other peoples headers it is usually where the most heat/pressure will be, so usually at the collector, and are usually the 18ga pipes.

Well there is a part number on them, 12569073. I can only assume it is a GM part number

I'm not in the US, so have no idea. Maybe post up a new thread asking others ? Ive no idea where I even found the photos online, but was most likely on this forum.
