Default Filter on turbo vs cold air intake? Any back to back test?

Right now I have a pretty standard setup of truck/c6 manild hot side that places the turbo right in front of the balancer. The hot air off the radiator blows right on the turbo that has a medium size k&n on it. I was debating on building a "cold air intake". Its going to be kinda a pain due to space issues so I wanted to see some real world numbers or track times on the differance.

I also am considering switching from a large ebay intercooler to a better quality name brand IC as my tuner sugested.

I have the budget phamspeed hot side which also places the turbo right in front of the crank pulley. I initially just had the traditional filter right off the turbo due to ease of figment etc. I relocated the battery to the trunk and ran large 4" piping to where the battery was and ran a huge cone filter so it'd suck cooler air from the fender. I noticed a faster spool, lower iats, and lower coolant temps.

not a turbo but i know of a truck procharger set up where the air intake is right next to the exhaust manifold. it gets very warm air. the guy built a 130deg 4" intake pipe that put the filter in a much better spot. instantly lost 30hp. took it off and the 30hp came right back.

i also saw nice gains with a whipple by opening up the air box which gave it warmer air but less restriction.

that being said both of those are pully driven with no feed back(waste gate). i am sure a turbo is different.

if it were mine i would extend it to a cooler spot only if it was a very simple pipe, no more than one 90 and only 1-2' long. any more than that and i would just leave it sucking warm air.

We have a track rental coming up on the 29th. I'll do a
back to back test there. I have about 2 ft of 4in pipe with a single 45* bend in the middle attached to my turbo.

Mine would pretty much have to have 2 90 degree angles and I'd put it where the battery is now.

I'm going to try something because I have a short 4" cone filter on the turbo and it's super restrictive. Gained 20-30whp by just removing it, but more concerning is my IAT's raised about 20 degrees with the filter and I tappered back on boost up top. The filter is sucking itself in and causing the turbo to work harder, but I can't put a larger one on it as it's right up against the frame. We are going to try a 90 degree bend down and pop the filter on it. Nothing to crazy, just enough for the full size K&n to fit.

The one that is on the car ATM is made by AEM and is like a K&N except you don't have to re-oil it. It was one of the shortest 4" cones I could find, but it's starting to cave in on itself.

Here is a pic of the filter that is on there.

Here is a pic of the filter I originally bought.

I can't run it over to the battery area because I have the charge pipe coming up through there, my vacuum manifold is there and I still have to hook up my AC. Best bet is 90 straight down.

Does that k& n have a closed end or does it have a filter end?

They both have a closed end.

I wonder if a filter end works better less restriction?

Yeah, I'm not sure, maybe. The least restrictive filter is no filter.

I have HPTuners so I can do a couple pulls and monitor my IAT's to see if they skyrocket again and if boost tapers up top. I don't mind losing a couple HP to have a filter. I just don't want hi IAT's come summer

I spent some time on the fone w/ the Spectre tech, asking about filters. He mentioned that the filter w/ the cone inverted filter media in it, will add about 10% flow.

I run the long version of that filter on my car and several others including one that makes over 1100rwhp. That car lost 50rwhp with the filter on vs off once at 1000hp mark, no loss at 750-800rwhp.

On my car I lost 7hp taking it off, and picked it back up with the filter back on when I had the T6 76 making 623rwhp.

maxxmitchell, so you are running a spectre with a filter end? I always that that was a cheap brand and to stick with k&n.

id like to see more info on this too as i have yet to buy a filter.. i have plenty of room for one directly off the turbo.

What about running a screen? ive heard they really disrupt incoming airflow but id like to hear more on that too..

In to see what people are running in high hp applications, 1000whp+

I was hoping i didn't have to run 2 air filters on my single turbo. My old setup had a full size K&N filter that started caving in around 550whp.

RPS has some good open end cone filters in 6 and 9 inch long that would work good either directly on the turbo( they have up to 5 inch inlets) or on any intake piping as well.
