Default Upgrade Oil pump with turbo?

I have decided to go turbo instead of h/c on my 5.3 build. I just got my new pan/pickup tube and tray. Should I throw a new high volume pump in there if I'm going turbo? I know it wouldn't hurt to put a new one in there but is it necessary? I had a blower on my mustang for 15k miles and never did anything with the pump and never needed it but I figured I'd ask, if so what would you guys recommend, keep in mind this is a budget build also, not trying to go all out since next winter I will probably pull it and build it from the rotating assembly up.

I have read where some of the top LS engine builders stay away from high volume oil pumps. Most of them will say go with a ported OEM pump or a standard volume/high pressure Melling.

alright. I was thinking the stock one should be just fine. But I'm new to these ls engines so I like to make sure I do it right the first time....and while I have it apart and on the stand where it's easy to do.

my machinest/engine builder has supplied me with a melling standard volume/high pressure pump for the same reason as what 02blackbeauty19 said, they stay away from them and told me they don't believe in the high volume ones being required and prefer to give a little more pressure.
Mines not FI atm but my melling is going on a stroker motor.

If I may resurrect this thread... does the oil feed to the turbo play into the whole high volume vs oem pump story?

the stock pump works fine, in reality 90% of the stock parts are perfect, and there is no sense swapping them out.

all you need to make power is the motor and a turbo, and then if you want to make more than 10lbs of boost i would say a cheap valvespring is perfect.

after that if you want to make more a mild cam will help out and if you want over 20lbs i would say studs.

honestly 500whp is alot to most people.
unless you wanna go pretty fast and you wanna spend money, and in that case you're not going to listen to me lol

Stock pump is fine for an oil-cooled turbo. Even with my -3AN line dumping into the valve cover, there was no noticeable drop in oil pressure.

I'll go with a stock pump then. Already have an LS1 cam (slightly bigger and free), LS6 valve springs, and head studs. 317 heads on an LM7.

Sorry to wake from dead again, but when you say stock do you mean literally the pump you buy from Chevy, or stock equivalent like Melling M295 standard pressure/volume?

Also, do you know who made the original oil pumps for GM?

literally the pump that was installed at the factory is fine. The only stock oil pump i would replace would be on a early LS1s due to a design issue which was recognized and correct by GM pretty early on (2003/2004 i think). i would replace it with a bone stock LS2 or LS6 oil pump

What If stock oil pump is bad for some reason, is Melling not good?
