Anyway that is some really nice work.

That's awesome! Myron always thought I was crazy for having this much power in my street car, ha. He was pretty impressed with the numbers that came out of the little engine though. He will be missed!

I was able to make some good progress on the engine this weekend! Just need to order up a few pieces and it will be ready to run soon.

What head gaskets are those? And would you care to show how you have the coolant return plumbed?

Parallel cooled Cometic 4.150 MLX. I don't have a pic off hand. I can grab one tonight when I get home, but I drilled and tapped the rear side of each head for a -8 banjo fitting. I will Y those 2 -8s to a -12 and that will go to the top of the radiator.

Good eye 3P. I was all girlie looking at the shiny objects and didn't even look at the meat and potatoes.

Here's a couple pics showing the fittings in the back of the heads.

That parallel cooling system is awesome. I saw Greg Good post about it a while ago on Fb, but you are the first person I have seen use it.
Do you think it improved cooling at all?

I see the chambers are softened also! What size are the chambers now?

What is the advantage of an 8 into 1 collector aside from bling factor?

That's who I got the idea from as well. I have not ran it with this setup yet, but it makes much more sense, and I see no reason why it would't work better.

I wrote up a quick CNC program to do the majority of the cutting and keep them all the same. Then went in by hand afterwards to finish blend and smooth them out.

They started as 45cc, and are 51cc now all said and done.

The 8-1 is just something I have wanted to do for looks and mostly the sound aspect of it. Performance benefits can be realized on N/A apps when plumbed into the collector in firing order, the pulses can help scavenge better. However with a turbo and having backpressure involved, it may not see as much if any benefit. I also do not have it plumbed in firing order either, so it is an experiment more than anything. The header is reverse stepped from 1-7/8 out of the heads to 1-3/4 into the collector. So between this, and the collector, it may help spool somewhat. We will find out soon enough. It may have a different sound, or it may not. Either way 9k+ RPM is going to sound cool no matter what the exhaust setup!

I wish I had more of an update, but as per usual, I am lacking in that department.

I was mocking up the heads to check PTV shortly after the last update of getting the shortblock together, and found I did not have enough radial clearance.

It was a mistake on my part as I should have checked it to know precisely what it was when I had it at the shop, but I was missing a few of the parts at the time. So long story short, I didn't check it when I should have. All said and done, when I got it mocked up, it was just scraping the coating off the piston. So the majority of the progress I made that one day on the engine had to be undone. I got the pistons back out and reliefs recut, so now it just has to go back together again.

An opportunity came up to sell the S485, so of course I went ahead and did that. I took advantage of the LJMS Black Friday deal, and picked up a Forced Inductions S491/100 with a tial housing. Same housings and size externally of course, just more wheel! I am looking forward to seeing what we can get out of the 91 at full send mode on the engine dyno!

I also whipped up a new valley cover with a breather set up. I didn't get pics of it, but I made up some baffling for the underside of the cover and had Nate at OGG weld it up for me. I will be running a single 1" breather hose from the valley to the catch can. I wanted to keep hoses off of each valve cover as I will be removing them often to check valve lash, etc. I also didn't want to weld bungs on the fancy NOS GM C5-R valve covers if I could help it.

Finally, this is my last week at TPIS, and I have taken a new job at Viking Performance. It is much closer to home, so I will be saving roughly 2 hours a day in commuting time alone. This means there is little to no chance of side engine work distracting me from my own projects as well. So I am pretty excited for a fresh start, also to have more time and less stress in the day. Progress should only improve from here on out!

Hey Jakson you got any updates for us? I’ve been planning on Turbo LS Swapping my 05 Subaru Outback and after I blow up this iron 5.3 with ls9 heads and cams I planned on destroking a 6.0 with a 4.8 crank and running either twin or sequential turbos on the setup through a built t56/tr6060 gunning for like 8-900 wheel turnt all the way up. I plan on using the car as a road racer that revs to 8-8.5k with the hope of building it reliably enough to daily driven GT car if I play my cards right. This thread has been awesome inspiration and info for an 18 year old shooting for the stars on my second LS build in the future.

Couple holes in your plan. First Ls9 heads will not work on a 5.3 blocks bore

Second if you leave the stock 6.0 crank in it it will only so everything you want it to do better. It will spool better, make more power everywhere, and still turn whatever rpm you want it to

RPM comes from proper intake manifold, head and valvetrain selection
