There are always a few lucky guys that never blow there 4l60`s ( very few ) but I have personally blown way too many 4l60`s . These days for any forced induction car I go th400 or 4l80 the first time and never look back ....

I ran a "level 3" 60e (supposedly the strongest available) for about 2-3 years, strictly street driving. This was back when I had my rear mount at ~500rwhp. Put it through several high speed runs, and about 15k miles of spirited street driving. Then the 3-4 shift started slipping. After awhile, it got pretty bad.

I didn't want to blow it up so I swapped it out for a 80e and also a D1SC. Car now has 6XXrwhp, 8 months with the new setup, ~1500 hard street miles, and 2 passes at the strip. Still running as strong as day 1.

I'm running a flt now with no problems. My buddy just installed a 80 and he really regrets it. The weight and he gets a bad vibration through the whole car ..
Weighs~40 more and the vibration is obviously a problem somewhere. Flt and RPM do know their 60e's.

80s r diehard no dout. They have been proven to take a beaten. I used a 80 once and it was just overkill. Personally I won't use another one unless I'm making over 800whp. I beat on my flt 60. My car is currently tuned at 677 /674! It holds it's own. But I guess if u don't want that feeling it might go Everytime u hammer down go with a 80 bc they deff r tuff. Just overkill for me

It's not the clutch material, it's the setup and valving up to 550 or so.
Eventually it's just cheaper to build something else.

I can't quite figure out why people continue to push the 60 over the 80 with cars that make some power. -any FI car-
What's it take to make a 60e survive with 750hp???
It's a long list. Nobody list's everything they do.
80's do it with BW HE clutches, 34 sprag, and TG shift kit.
You can find as many guys doing this in their garage as you can 60e's surviving that much power....

You can order an 80e from several places at that build level for~ lvl 3-4 60e prices.
Once you get over 450hp or so the 3.06 1st is useless except for slow cruising.
On the street the 2.48 80e 1st helps more than it hurts.

Why do Ford's w/ AOD(E)'s not have this problem? Supra's, Turbo GN's? 1 ton trucks???
They use a different 2/3/4 clutch setup than the 60e style 2/3/4. 4th is it's own pack and this makes it more reliable in the long run.

It started getting to where when I was in third and pulling around 6-6500 rpm it would just start blowing thru the clutches. it was as if the car was suddenly doing a burnout.

I am going with jake and never looking back. if I were a guy sticking around 750 and below i would go RPM level 7. thats the best 60 out no doubt.

a guy here on FI is making over 900rwhp with this trans. i still consider it a ticking time bomb.

I build my own 60e's and run them in all my stuff...

Everything has the be perect, the build and the tune. As far as the 3-4 clutch failure...as long as the input drum isn't cracked and shift request times are where they need to be for given TPS position, you shouldn't have issues for a long time
