Default New turbo build questons.

Hello,

I have been on this website a long time. I don’t post much, but I sure do read a lot. I have been working on a my first turbo build, and my first LS based engine build. I have been getting a lot of help from PWRTRIP, thanks a ton!

My goal is to drive the car around on the street, and maybe race it at the track a few times a month. I was looking for around 750hp. I was hoping I could get some insight from you guys on how I am doing and what I can improve upon. If I have put up to much information here at once please let me know

Chassis:

1966 Pontiac LeMans, weight should be 3600-3700lbs with driver.

Engine:
1999 LQ4
Stock short block, ported L92 heads and Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake. Flow numbers:
.600 Int 335cfm Ex 207 cfm
.500 Int 322 cfm Ex 201 cfm
.400 Int 298 cfm Ex 195 cfm
.300 Int 248 cfm Ex 178 cfm
.200 Int 188 cfm Ex 138 cfm
.100 Int 122 cfm Ex 87 cfm

Turbo:
Borg Warner ST80- T6 flange - 87mm exhaust side.
Truck manifolds with a 2.25 crossover
4 inch exhaust off the turbo, 3 inch dual tailpipes

Transmission

92 - 4L80E, no torque converter yet.

Rear end:

I was thinking a 9 inch, 3.50 or 3.70 gear

My questions:
  • I was thinking of going with a Speed Inc. TU1 cam, any thoughts on this?
  • Should I try to port the stock oil pump? Or get a LS2 pump?
  • Do I need to change the timing chain to a LS2?
  • What intake should I run? The Victor Jr. I have on there now is ported with the heads, but I am going to have to run an elbow to the TB. Should I just try to find a LS3 intake?
  • I am going to take the rods out to put in ARP rod bolts, I already have them, while I have the pistons out should I open the ring gap to .019?
  • What ports to do I need to add to the turbo piping/where do I put them to take measurements (i.e. Backpressure)?
  • Since this is going to probably be a Speed Density tune, should I just remove the for the MAF from the wiring harness?
  • What RPM’s should I be limited to with this setup?
  • I am going to use a two speed fan from a Ford Taurus.
I have the wiring harness done like they have it on LT1swap.com, I added two wires for the fan. One in the blue connector, pin 42. And the other in the red connector at pin number 33. The Taurus fan is wired so the low and high circuit cannot be on at the same time. I have seen people accomplish this using 3 solenoids. Is there a better way to do this? I also thought about using the Volvo fan controller.

Parts list:
  • ARP head studs
  • Are ARP main studs needed?
  • Should I get LS7 lifters? My 99 LQ4 only has 40,000 miles on it.

We also had to move the alternator to an upper position:

And I added the idler pulley below the power steering pump as after we moved the alternator the idler pulley wouldn't fit between the water pump and alternator:

What we did here is put the idler pulley off a truck on the idler arm of a F-body. Then we custom made a bracket that attaches to the power steering bracket bolt. Also the bottom bolt of the idler arm goes into the hole in the block.

Youre going to want the ring gap .028-.030" at .019 the ring ends will butt and pop the top or middle ring lands.

Hello Martin, I spoke to you on the phone about that cam last week As we spoke on the phone, I'm not quite at the point to buy the cam. I am considering it. The reason I put the TU1 in the description here, is it seems to have been a standard here.

Does everything else look like a good though? After reading INTMD8's post I wanted to make sure I had a good combination going.

I think everything else looks good.

I would of used the 92mm turbine wheel in a T4 flange for your set-up, but it's a moot point now

I personally would do an LS3. I'm not a fan of the tight bends on the Elbows..

For a heavy street car and only 750 i'd say use a stock long runner intake and the smallest cam listed. Or run the tallest elbow you can fit.

Most guys won't add studs without a line hone. Depends on your bearing clearance if you can get away with the stud swap.
At least run arp main bolts.

With your small cam, I'd just run stock rod bolts and stay below 6400.

Ports - one at the turbine flange plugged for BP testing, 2 in the down pipe for 02 sensors -WB & NB and use the WB port for BP testing.
You'll want one port for IAT either before or after the throttle body.
