the synthetic 5w40 ive used in the past. after reading this ill go back to it, not hateful on the wallet and you can get it at walmart. my other choice would be the vr1 oil thats pretty much at every parts store too.

That's what I've wondered. It would be nice if adding it to any oil would be as good as oils that have it. It was mentioned earlier that the detergents in regular oil might prevent the ZDDP from doing it's job.

FWIW, I read years ago that the Rotella had suffered a major reduction in ZDDP when catalytic converters had started to become common in diesels. Does anyone have any recent data on the zinc levels in either the 15w40 conventional, or especially in the 5w40 synthetic formulas of the Rotella?

I'm still kind of drawn to Rotella, even after my incident where I thought I had a problem with it. It's quite possible it was all a big coincidence.

Recent post I read somewhere said they tested unused t6 synthetic 5w40 at blackstone and it was over 1200 on zinc. I think it was on the Bob the oil guy forums.

Edit: found it

If any other oil meets the requirements of that T6 oil wont it have a similar amount of zddp in it?

Thanks Sarg, good info in that thread!

Looks like the Rotella synthetic is a good option. Not necessarily so much the 15w40 conventional though (which is what I "had my problem" with).

Yeah I used amsoil stuff but gets old buying $130 for a case of oil haha. If I can find the vr1 in 10w30 I go with that, otherwise rotella will be my 2nd choice either way it shall be cheaper haha.

In my testing the 20w50 Amsoil didn't maintain oil pressure nearly as consistently as the Redline when beating on it hard with the turbo at 20+ psi. IIRC the price was close, so Redline seemed much better overall than Amsoil.

Not necessarily. Seems every manufacturer has different levels of zinc and such in them. I honestly though the Valvoline and Mobile 1 would have been a bit better than they were. The 0w40 Mobile seems good, but hard to find around here.

For me I think the best option is rotella t6 5w40 with the zddp additive. Cheap, high zinc content and I can buy it anywhere I go

Reline, Lucas, stp and rislone all sell a zddp additive. Them are the ones I've actually seen in the stores, but I'm sure there are more. I've only tried the rislone one myself

This question might be a little off topic but what would be closer to 5W30, 5W40 or 10W30? I was looking into switching to VR 10W30 but I didn't know Rotella made 5W40. I use Mobil 1 5W30 now and didn't know they took all the good stuff out it. My car has amazing oil pressure and I want to make sure I use a good oil to keep things that way.

Good thread.
