you cant say for certain 2618 would have held up to this... maybe it would have had a better chance but this wasnt just a little knock.. and in the end what does it matter.. the block is toast. this is not the pistons fault

I didnt say for certain, but theres a reason shops and builders dont use them in high boost FI builds..

4032 has around 10-11% silicon content in them and can shatter like glass almost like the stock piston which is 17-19% silicon...

2618 pistons have less than 2% silicon and have a high tolerance to detonation.

sorry missed that original post.
Yea from the pitting on the piston it APPEARS to be HEAVY detonation. But why only on one cylinder????

thanks I know the differences.... 2618 can also piston slap badly and wear bores because it has to be installed looser, so keep that in mind when people choose the parts they do. my point is with det that destroys the block who cares about the piston

So these where weisco 2618 or the mahle 4032?

A lot of people have broke the forged mahle motors with some abuse like a little det.

It appears to be a 4032...

I'm not saying your wrong ^ I'm just conversing with you..

plenty of people running .005-.006 piston/wall clearance with no problems on the street..

minor piston slap won't do it though, the block probably cracked because the piston exploded like glass...

OP do you know the piston to wall clearance that was setup on your motor? they might have gave you too big of a piston/wall gap.

Kinda ridiculous to blame the alloy of the piston when the motor sees detonation. They live just fine without detonation. Running them myself. Aggressive tunes, bad fuel, etc are what kills the majority of motors with holes in the pistons.

I would have gone with some 2618's had I not gotten such a good deal on this motor. Just sayin...

15* timing on 93 is what the root cause was. Too much timing for the boost level along with the compression especially on consecutive pulls. It would probably live okay on a single pull at a time but 30 secs between highway pulls is not nearly enough cooldown time for the turbo, intercooler, heads and chamber. Heat + 15* killed it.

Word of advice learn to read plugs once you get rebuilt. That'll tell you if your tuneup is too aggressive or not.

and add a methanol kit. i have a cheap snows stg 1 boost cooler. 250 bucks was a no brainer. sure there are a lot more elaborate setups out there.. whatever, this one works great for me.

considering what stock pistons have done on a good tune the last thing id blame would be the piston is all im saying . **** my junk went 109mph in the 1/8th at 3800 pounds on stock pistons. when i took them out they were perfect. its all in the tune and being smart. ofcourse i have meth injection so det resistance and the water pulling heat out of the combustion chamber is a big help

+1 ^^ this is the moral of this story...

I was just pointing out it was a bad piston choice on top of it all...

I would say coolant got in the cylinder is what caused the excesive pressure to take out the piston and block. Thats what I think but regardless those heads should not have been used for boost unless you have some dished pistons. We all live and learn and sometimes its costly.
Hope you get it back together and get to enjoy it this summer.
