Default Cog Update 4-20-04...

Well I haven't seen a Cog update in awhile so I thought I would get mine finished up....

Here is the finished Automotion Steel Bracket(on the left) next to my slightly warped ATI aluminium bracket(right).

You can see how much the slot was opened up to get the tensioner nice and high..out of the way. I took the bracket to the guys who did my tig welding for me on some stuff. They charged me 20 bucks to open it up on their lathe. Saved me the hassle of air grinding the hell out of it like I did to the ATI piece. I threw some paint on it so it wouldn't rust up.

I added 4 washers per standoff this time around(had 3 before) This helped give me room to push the tensioner high and to clear the LS1 idler by about the width of a washer lol. I also added the ATI washer back under the s/c cog to push it out. I did this to get the belt to ride all the way on the s/c cog. Last time around it was right on the edge. The belt now rides about even on both the s/c cog and the crank cog Looks great when the car is running no overhanging cog belt at all.

The s/c cog to alternator clearance remains about the same with the added ATI washer under the s/c cog and the 4 washers per standoff, which is great.

OH Yeah here is a pic of the cogs and the cog belt on the right way, with the tensioner on top of it. I have it tensioned down tight but not too tight. The cogs are way quiet now that the belt rides the right way. Before it sounded like the car had a gear drive on it

I also pinned my crank from the front with the ATI/Procharger pin kit. Thanks Blackbird, its on it way back in the morning. I also finished up installing the SVO 42.5's on her. With the speed inc rails, the swap only took 20 minutes at the longest, definately a great mod to do and investment. Set my FP to 43 psi for now, until I get my tune loaded into the PCM. Car sounds FREAKIN AWESOME

DOH! did I mention how damn sturdy this set up now is? No more flexing here. Usually when I put the s/c bolts in and tightened them down the bracket would flex when the bolts bottomed out, not anymore. This thing didn't budge

Now all that is left is to get my NoGo Tune loaded into the PCM and see what happens. Hopefully I will get to the track sometime this weekend that would be awesome.

Hopefully this will be the last battle with the cog set up from here on out. Minor scrimishes will be acceptable but no more big problems...I hope or its SD-Concepts time....if they ever get their act together lol.

Thanks Kev. What??? You don't like my custom transmisson line brackets? I am the wire tie KING lol. I have been meaning to cut them and route them out of the way with rubber tranmission hose, but I keep putting it off. Looks like I will doing another small project before the week is up lol.

I got sick of those lines on my other car that had a 4l60 and an ATI and cut them down - its easy enough to do compared to what you went through getting those cogs to work. Look pretty good now and I bet the pinned balancer wont loosen up anymore..

Looking good, yea I noticed they were quieter too.....

The belt wrap is a lot better, no slipping at all

From the looks at the pic it looks like I'm running the tensioner in the exact same spot, I marked it off so I know where to put it each time, I need to tap out the hole and put that top bolt back in, I stripped it while trying to take it out

Getting close

Yep, I had it pinned with the other ATI kit and that damn lil pin slipped out enough for the crank pulley to move about 1/4 inch away from where it was suppose to be Like you said, it takes about 5 min to do, and that was no lie, bolted it up, drilled and put the crank cog and bolt back on-DONE. I hope that I am done messing with these damn cogs, I want to enjoy the car now. 175mi since November, that is just sad especially with this engine being new.

BOS, lol we've been getting close to getting these cogs done for half a year now Lets get these cars running and putting down some good numbers and times already....stop stripping stuff out, I have a tendency to break bolts off in the holes when tightening stuff up My bro always makes fun of me when I do that.

I had the stock bracket marked like that as you can see above. I will remember to mark the new bracket too, when I am under the car cutting the tranny lines up. Its a good idea especially with how these things need to be tensioned.

Yep the are really quiet now, I don't know if that is a good thing or not, I kinda liked the gear drive sound, but I love the way my exhaust sounds a lot more. The car gives me goosebumps just idling, my year old son LOVES it, my friend Josh freaked when he heard it and my Girl Loves it too

Do you have a good sound clip of your ATI race ready BOV? I heard a stang the other day with a s/c and it made a wicked sound when he let off between gears, too bad I was in the Mountaineer I want to hear if that I what I heard or not.
Thanks,
J

If you DL the Speed Inc. open house vid that was in the multimedia a while back and midwest section my car is the first car in the vid...

Its constantly bleeding off the air, sounds like a Jet coming down the street, or a heavily modified street sweeper

Yeah I have that clip but can't make it out. My HKS makes a chirping sound a light loads and a real cool whoosh with a high pitched sound when I reallly get on it and let off, but this mustang sounded awesome when it shifted, too bad it was a stang tho lol.

Looks good guys. I should have my supercharger back this week from ATI with a new housing installed. They said my housing was machined incorrectly and was causing my problems. Damn thing is two years old and they completely rebuilt it last year and no one caught the bad housing. Well hope to have it back soon making some big boost numbers.

Jeremy, do you get a lot of belt dust from the belt break in.......

I got a light dusting over the whole area around the blower pulley, then I wipe it down and it won't come back after about 100 miles.......seems like the belt needs to find its wear spot....

Bos, I noticed a lot of dust too, with the first belt, but the edges were wearing on the side that was on the edge of the s/c cog. I will have to get a couple miles on this belt to see what happens. Too bad I didn't even get to use the last belt I cut off, the car never left the driveway I'll let you know how this one wears.

yea, the last belt I cut off was in really good shape after 200 miles, I was suprised, it was wearing on the edge where it was hanging off the crank pulley, and it was buring on one side of the idler pulley, now the inside lip has a mirror image on it, the extra spacer I put in helped.......I'll see if I can snap some pics soon

Cool, sounds like there is a slight misalignment still. I'll be watching the edges of the belt to see if it wears funny on the sides of the tensioner. If that is the case then the misalignment is at the bracket and you would have to shim it at the standoffs with shims of different thickness, I would think. My belt looks to be pretty straight by looking down at it. Before it had a slight bow at the tensioner. Now with the added washers and a bracket that isn't warped it looks to be good.....but time will tell.

Yea, the one MAIN thing that would of saved a lot of time from the start would of been clearing out the bracket/tensioner slot........

Thats the first thing.....

Getting the belt under the tensioner pulley

LOL CHRIS! Everything has been noted here on the FI board. I agree with bos, I cleared out the stock ATI bracket but not enough, I was afraid to warp it any further by removing anymore aluminum
